New report examines Mogadishu land-grabbing schemes and the power of political influence, private wealth, and coercive force.
📘 New Commentary | Elite Capture of Urban Land in Mogadishu: Eroding State Legitimacy
Mogadishu’s growing land crisis raises serious concerns about land governance, forced evictions, the rule of law, and public trust in state institutions.
Our latest commentary examines how political and commercial interests, weak land administration, and limited legal protections are contributing to the crisis. It also highlights the human and security consequences and offers recommendations for strengthening land governance, protecting citizens’ rights, and restoring state legitimacy.

The Lancet staff are going on strike for the first time in the journal’s 200-year history.
Is it surprising? I don’t think so.
Authors produce the research and write the papers. Reviewers provide scientific evaluation, mostly for free. Editors carry much of the burden of keeping the system running. Then the same academic community pays thousands of dollars in APCs to make its own work open access.
Yet staff are now striking over pay, while the publisher’s scientific, technical and medical division reports more than £1 billion in annual adjusted operating profit.
So there is a simple question: where does all that money go?
Authors, reviewers, editors, and institutions are carrying an ever-growing burden. I don’t think the current academic publishing model is sustainable.

Why should Member States place their trust in me to lead WHO?
I am pleased to share with you my manifesto, which answers that question - setting out a clear vision and the priorities I would bring to rebuilding WHO together.
At its heart is a country-first, people-centred, networked @WHO that is one step ahead of global health challenges and always in partnership.
I invite you to read it, challenge the ideas I put forward and share what you expect from the next WHO Director-General.

This is my opinion article: Beyond the Agreement Table: Rethinking How We Measure Effective Mediation in the Horn of Africa
Mediation is often judged by visible milestones: ceasefires, signed agreements, and high-level summits. While important, these are only outputs—not outcomes.
In the Horn of Africa, where conflicts are shaped by overlapping political, social, economic, and geopolitical pressures, effective mediation should instead be measured by five deeper indicators:
1. Sustainable reduction in violence – Are civilians safer over time?
2. Legitimate governance – Are institutions more inclusive, accountable, and credible?
3. Social trust – Are communities rebuilding cooperation across divides?
4. Local ownership – Are citizens, civil society, women, youth, and business actors shaping the peace process?
5. Resilience – Can societies manage future shocks without returning to violence?
The real test of mediation is not how many agreements are signed, but whether it transforms how grievances are addressed and conflicts are prevented.

Maansadii Dhahar ee Hadraawi waxaa ku jiray tuducyadan qiimaha leh ee uga hadlayaye militarigii xukunka ku dhagay. “Inta qaran dhiskiisiyo, dhidibkiisu taagnaa, dheeraad nin dooniyo, nin ku dhaga xaqiisoo, dhacsanaayay baa jiray.” Maantana siyaasad-baastii Soomaalidu waxay isasoo taagtay halkaas uu Hadraawi sheegay waagii kacaanka.
Waxaa cimrigu na gaarsiiyey inaan u joogno madaxweyne @HassanSMohamud oo u bareeray xukun-boob ka baxsan sharciyaddii lagu doortay iyo inta kale ee siyaasadda rabta oo leh maya iyo car iyo wir. Hadde, waxay tani daliil u tahay inaan bulsho ahaan weli la daala-dhacayno maareynta awoodda siyaasadda.

FGS says “Golaha Mustaqbalka” is sold as democratic consultation & unity. Somalia’s crisis isn’t lack of meetings. It’s lack of binding rules that restrain Villa Somalia & protect the federal political settlement.

Great study from friend Dr Ahmed Aweys, and his colleagues on the ethical challenges physicians face when performing lifesaving interventions for pregnant women in Somalia.

4️⃣ The study recommends raising public awareness on the importance of timely consent for lifesaving interventions and developing legal protections for physicians who perform emergency surgeries for pregnant women.

The Bosaso-Garowe highway & Bosaso Port upgrades funded by Italy are more than infrastructure projects. They revive a strategic vision first pursued by the Somali Republic under the Barre regime in the 1980s. Italy supported that vision.

European desk officers become “high-level envoys” the moment they step off the plane in Mogadishu. Suddenly everything is political progress, security, and support, with no specifics, no follow-up, and no accountability.
