My latest piece in @newlinesmag reflecting on the complex relationship between the Jewish-American community & #Israel & whether this relationship can survive in its current form #ShireenAbuAkleh’s killing if there is no accountability/justice for her or the #Palestinian people
NEW: Peace is necessary for Palestinians and Jews alike — we must start by demanding accountability for the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh. A personal reflection on being Jewish American by @SSiminoff for @newlinesmag newlinesmag.com/first-person…

This is a very important and very thoughtful analysis of occupied East Jerusalem in the context of Israeli elections, in which the Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem are barred from voting.

Everyday, a prominent Republican - the president, a cabinet official, a primetime Fox host, the Michigan Senate candidate - says something insanely racist about Muslims or Arabs.
Meanwhile, my timeline is full of prominent Democrats and liberals getting mad about a random ad attacking Israel and screaming about antisemitism.
Crickets from them on the out-of-control Islamophobia from the GOP.

Israel elections: voter turnout hits 45 year high #IsraelElection
💥"Just yesterday and today, some 100,000 people landed at Ben Gurion Airport. 2 1/2 Knesset seats. Sure, not all of them came to vote, but most of them did. And that's just 2 days. Usually late October has fairly light traffic. The number of people who came to vote in the last two weeks is *astronomical*."

The idea is that we are supposed to applaud insights like "what if we applied pressure to Israel?" because they come from someone who two years ago was working around the clock to help Israel kill as many Palestinians as possible
One of many critical points in Jon Finer's excellent post-elections Israel policy agenda for Democrats: "A new approach should also start from the principle that U.S. policy will distinguish occupied territory and Israel proper."

Hezbollah has been preparing for a possible new war with Israel for three months, using tens of millions of dollars from Iran to rebuild its military capabilities, according to Lebanese security sources.
The group is focusing on explosives and attack drones while restoring command structures damaged in previous battles.
However, its weapons stockpiles and fighting forces remain understrength. Hezbollah is on alert for a possible U.S.-Iran escalation that could reignite fighting in Lebanon.

Israeli authorities’ decision to force thousands of Palestinians from their homes in response to the killing of two Israeli soldiers is collective punishment. You can oppose and condemn attacks on Israeli soldiers and also oppose the forced displacement of Palestinians that only deepens fear and resentment fueling this deadly cycle.
It’s morally indefensible and strategically self-defeating to make these families pay this price.

Israeli government TV admits that its operation in Hebron, which has involved the ethnic cleansing of entire neighborhoods, has unearthed no arms. Despite lies that Hebron was full of terrorists, only one rifle and one pistol were found in a search of hundreds of homes. The people of Hebron are peaceful, and even the IDF admits this operation is pointless and needs to end.

Gadi Eisenkot is the father of the so-called Dahyeh Doctrine used against southern suburbs of Beirut in '06: disproportionate retaliation and destruction of civilian infrastructure to establish deterrence. Then used in Gaza.

Daniel Levy | Former Israeli Peace Negotiator | US/Middle East Project (@USMEP):
Likud Party could be part of Eisenkot's government. And Likud is very extreme. Lieberman & Bennett almost certainly will be included.
You don’t need Ben-Gvir, Smotrich or Netanyahu to have hardline, zero-sum, continuity policies toward Palestinians.
The hope - from Israel’s perspective - is that they Soften the language, change some of the optics, and let the international community stand down.

Turnout in Ra'am's Bedouin heartlands was very low last time around - even by Arab standards.
A major shift tomorrow could affect not just Ra'am's seat tally, but also the wider balance of power within Israeli Arab politics.
