Don’t learn a skill as an NYSC corp member because It is a waste of time. This is what you want to hear ahbi… But I’m here to tell you that one of the wisest decisions you can make during your NYSC year is to learn a skill that prepares you for life after POP. Let me tell you why When I started NYSC, I was a pharmacist serving in Yobe State. I knew I had a degree, but deep down, I knew I wanted more than just my certificate and the experience of working in a pharmacy. I wanted to explore other career opportunities, discover what I could do beyond pharmacy, and position myself for a different future. So, I started learning. I took courses in Monitoring and Evaluation, MEAL Essentials, Data Analytics for Social Impact, and KoboToolbox. I also began developing digital skills in content creation, Canva design, CV writing, LinkedIn profile optimization, personal branding, and career positioning. Today, I’m using what I have learned to help other young professionals position themselves for opportunities, and work towards a career path that aligns with my interests. Imagine if I had spent my entire NYSC year waiting for my POP date without intentionally investing in myself. Would I have the same knowledge, clarity, and opportunities I am working towards today? Probably not. And let me be clear: learning a skill does not automatically guarantee a job or make you successful overnight. But it gives you something valuable which is more options. Your NYSC allowance may stop after POP, your PPA may not retain you and your certificate alone may not open every door you desire. This is why you should not wait until you pass out before preparing for your next chapter. My dear Corper, your NYSC year is not just a period to wear khaki, collect allawee, and count down to passing out. It can also be a season to discover yourself, build competence, meet people, and prepare for life beyond service. You don't have to have everything figured out before you start. Just start with what you have. I’ll share 5 practical steps to start learning a skill during NYSC in the comment section.
