🆕 Minister @mtpennycook has set out his plans for shared ownership. The problem? It’s a plan to sell more shared ownership homes, not to help existing shared owners. 🖇️ Link in next post

Your regular reminder that, if you’re a shared owner, you have no option to challenge the rent increases you’re required to pay. Your rent will continue to rise above RPI every year.

A review could inform future policy, but it wouldn’t resolve the urgent problems shared owners face today. The Bill is an opportunity to act now: we need buyback funding for SO homes that are unmortgageable or unaffordable. It’s not too late to write to the Bill committee ⬇️ 2

🆕 The Lords voted to add a statutory review of shared ownership to the Social Housing Bill. As expected, @mtpennycook has now tabled a Government amendment to remove it. Another missed opportunity to listen to shared owners. ❌ 1. 🧵

👀 @UKLabour ministers don’t want scrutiny. They just want to keep funding shared ownership newbuilds. Exhibit A.

Why @mtpennycook asked to remove it? So many s/o owners are suffering from being mis-sold and now notbeing able to sell due to fire safety issues.

And it's covered in ACM. Completed in 2012 for Origin Housing. Scaffolding up 8 years later. Places for People took over Origin in 2024. They've been allocated £300m in taxpayer funding for new homes. Build, baby, build @AngelaRayner @mtpennycook ❓️ acm-cladding-records.co.uk/r…

"The building is owned and run by Places for People, the UK’s biggest housing association. It contains seven social rent flats and 18 shared ownership properties targeted for London’s key workers." @angelarayner @mtpennycook Who is holding these landlords to account?
SIX YEARS of scaffolding. Remediation still hasn't started ⬇️ Places for People blame the Building Safety Regulator, omitting that their plans have failed to demonstrate fire safety compliance. The blame game continues. Residents, leaseholders and shared owners remain trapped.

And yet, to exit this government-backed scheme, you have to find someone willing to buy your share, knowing you’d be passing the same financial trap on to them. How unethical is that, @mtpennycook?

The Remediation Bill, as it stands, will not deliver the change that shared owners need. Over half of our members are trapped in the building safety crisis. Some are going bankrupt. We cannot support the Bill in its current form. @AngelaRayner @mtpennycook @FloEshalomi
The Remediation Bill is here. We cannot support it in its current form. Nearly a decade after Grenfell, innocent people are still paying for others’ failures. Labour must turn words into action: make homes fully safe and hold those responsible to account. Our statement ⬇️
