Now remind us how much it would add to greenhouse gas emissions.
Did you know? Heathrow's third runway could add over 100,000 jobs across the UK. At least 50,000 locally, plus 5,000 apprenticeships for young people. BUT it only happens if it gets built. TODAY, Heathrow's public consultation OPENS. And opponents will be filling it in. Here's how you can help: Respond to the consultation. Tell them you SUPPORT expansion and want it built FASTER. Opens: TODAY The DEADLINE is the 22nd of December First proposed in 2003. Earliest opening: 2039. We can't afford to wait any longer. Link below 👇

AI data centres are set to be obsolete in a few years - what'll happen to the sites? Planning consents required opencast coal operators to pay into escrow accounts to fund restoration of sites. Should such obligations be placed on data centre consents? tinyurl.com/3pzmrcp6

@mhclg the uproar on FB pages from communities is palpable with the amount of green belt going to housing in south and west Hertfordshire because of your ridiculously excessive housing targets ..it’s completely unsustainable..where is the water supply, sewage, road infrastructure and healthcare? Where will wildlife live and where will we grow our food? Change the grey belt definition, revise the excessive housing targets and end the call for sites because if you don’t you will lose the next general election. This is not poor quality scrubland, a disused petrol station or car park ⬇️ #GreenNotGrey @CHinchliffMP @libdemdaisy @TweetingCollins @OliverDowden

👀 A satellite study led by the University of Reading finds heat loss from the north Atlantic has fallen 18 per cent in 40 years. It's among the strongest signs yet that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, the ocean current system that carries heat north to Europe, is slowing. The study is still in peer review. newscientist.com/article/259…

Its an uneccessary target - we do not need to build 1.5 million dwellings. We have a surplus of 1.5 million now.
We can do so much better.  Labour has said its promise to build 1.5 million homes by the end of Parliament was…  “always a stretch target.” Here’s how it's going: We’ve built 437,900 homes.  That’s less than 30% of the target and we’re nearly halfway through the Parliament. Here’s 3 RADICAL actions the gov could take to reach the target.  1️⃣ LEAVE the Aarhus Convention: Aarhus makes the British people PAY for delays to projects that benefit them. We end up spending money on lawyers, lobbyists and consultants that could be spent building homes.  2️⃣ PRE-APPROVE beautiful homes: Publish a national pattern book of quality designs and let anyone who wants to build them skip the queue.  3️⃣ ABOLISH Natural England: Its rules held up 160,000 homes on the basis of ‘nutrient neutrality’. The Government has given Natural England the power to delay, block, ban and shut down improvements to Britain. This has to stop.

Whitehall, driven by @hmtreasury, has left the local plans system no longer fit for purpose. Perhaps @mtpennycook could rediscover the planning principles he advocated in opposition?
The planning minister Matthew Pennycook has pushed back by three months the end-of-year examination submission deadline for councils with draft local plans prepared under the current system if they reach the second formal consultation stage by 31 December. planningresource.co.uk/artic…

The onward march of AI data centres. "Essential to economic growth". Allegedly.
Google illegally cleared an estimated 250,000 trees across 330 hectares of forest in Muhos, northern Finland, to prepare for a new AI data center before completing mandatory environmental impact assessments And another 150,000 trees felled at Otanmäki theguardian.com/environment/…

A few tins of peaches and some water… won’t make any difference ! What this government should be doing is protecting our good farmland for food production should an emergency arise..
🚨 The Government has been accused of 'scaremongering' after warning British households to stockpile food, water and cash amid growing fears of cyber attacks and disruption to food supplies. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting defended the advice, saying people should be 'alert but not alarmed' as the UK faces increasing threats from hostile states and extreme weather. 🗣️ "Those are the sorts of everyday challenges and threats we could well face, and it is right we ask the country to be ready..." The warnings come amid wider concerns over Britain's food security, with MPs hearing calls for greater protection of domestic food production. READ MORE: ow.ly/7wl85100pHJ

In connection to coming climate breakdown I have been warning of the need for this for years But it will take a lot more than offering advice on personal actions We will need to be on a government-led 'war' footing to even begin to tackle what's coming theguardian.com/politics/202…

Today's reminder to protect and enhance local democracy.
A fourth local authority has rejected updating its constitution to align with the government’s impending national scheme of delegation, which limits the ability of elected members to make planning decisions. planningresource.co.uk/artic…

We have a surplus of homes….Not this crazy 6.9m shortage. Also, the planning system is not holding up housebuilding. Firstly, there are issues in the market and secondly, Government won’t fund all the social housing required.
As @CPSThinkTank has calculated, we are 6.9 million houses short of the European average. And the shortage is greatest in and around our cities. London is on course to build just a quarter of its housing target this year, with no development at all in four of its boroughs.

It might not seem “valuable” to you but it is countryside, it grows food, it houses wildlife, it houses country dwellers. So quite apart from the fact that there isn’t the shortage you claim, focus on the brownfield land please.
