I am very sorry to hear of Norm's passing. Although I didn't have the chance to meet him in person, I enjoyed his writing on math education in California; e.g., he wrote this excellent article in the LA Times. My condolences to his family. latimes.com/opinion/story/20…
I’m Dr. Norman Matloff’s daughter, and it is with great sadness that I share that my father passed away earlier in June, surrounded by his family. He faced his cancer diagnosis with unflagging optimism and never stopped pursuing his passions of writing, mentoring students, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. He has left behind a legacy: generations of UC Davis graduates in his 40+ years teaching, open source software and tutorials available to anybody, a body of technical work in research publications, software packages, and books. The lively discourse that he had with all of you on this platform gave him great pleasure, and he felt genuine connections with many of you here. He will be so very missed. May his memory be a perpetual blessing.

NWEA data shows that the students who performed the lowest on math tests also had the largest loss over the summer. That loss was largest in early and late grades. From 4th to 8th grade, the 25th percentile and 75th percentile had similar gains during the school year.

If you need a fun math learning app for your kids, mine (6&8) love @Smartick. Still looking for the equivalent for reading comprehension (i.e. read some text and answer some questions or do something based on text)

A mark of emotional maturity is hearing disagreement without taking offense. Thoughtful dissent doesn't always mean you're wrong. It often means the issue is complex and your knowledge is incomplete. Good-faith debate isn't an attack. It's an opportunity to sharpen your ideas.

Daddy’s home! 😍 You’re unlikely to see anything more touching today than this little one’s joyful reaction as her father arrives home from work. Watch her face as she first hears his voice and then catches a few quick glimpses as he walks through, presumably putting away his coat, keys, etc. Talk about the “look of love!” Separation can be difficult at this stage… but that may be more true for parents than for their infants. Because children don’t develop object permanence (awareness of that which they cannot see) until 7-8 months of age, rest assured your little one isn’t fretting over your absence… at least not yet. But lack of object permanence doesn’t mean your child doesn’t know you (as evidenced here) - it just means that things that, for babies, things that are “out of sight” are also generally “out of mind.” As object permanence develops, so too does separation anxiety, which is far more common at 9-10 months. Too cute. This lovely reunion was shared to IG by shgmood.

Happy Birthday to Isaac Newton, born #OnThisDay (current calendar dates) in 1643. During his life, Newton discovered the laws of gravity, the nature of white light and calculus and his wider discoveries and inventions have, ultimately, changed the way we view the universe.

LOL! 🤣 Long before babies can speak conventionally, they begin laughing - making laughter one of humankind’s earliest and most important forms of communication. For your baby, laughter (which typically begins at about 3 months of age) conveys much more than just “I find this funny.” According to Caspar Addyman - a British researcher who specializes in baby laughter (and whose job I will now envy until the end of time), laughter is not only a signal that your baby is feeling relaxed and comfortable - but also that they are finding real pleasure in the company of others. In fact, Addyman’s research suggests that - exposed to the same stimuli - babies are up to eight times more likely to laugh in the presence of another child or trusted adult. That’s because laughter is fundamentally social. Think of it as your baby’s way of saying, “I’m enjoying our connection.” This giggly little one was shared to TT by gemandroe.
In an increasingly frightening world, I'm thankful for babies laughing.

My daughter and I spoke to the SF Board of Supervisors about why the city should bring back Algebra in middle school. I let 6yo Lola Partovi decide for herself whether to come and what to say. What she said blew me away. xitter.cf/apartovi/status/172412…

Wow! I just ate a 2/6 pound burger! @awrestaurants never gives up on their 1/3 pounder. For context, this is the famous #math story where their 1/3 pounder flopped in the 1980's, because people thought it was smaller than the @McDonalds 1/4 pounder (because, you know, 4 is bigger than 3). So A&W came back in 2021 with the 3/9 pounder, with the best burger ad ever: youtu.be/EMNqJQaf08E But that didn't work either. Well, they're back! This new version makes the brilliant move of separating the 1/3 pound into 2 visually distinct 1/6 pound patties. Now it's obvious. Of course 2/6 is bigger than 1/4. Because 2 is bigger than 1, and 6 is bigger than 4! 😂 In this age, it's even more important for people to learn how to think. My fall schedule has almost completely filled up with schools and districts having me come to give talks about how to build Human Intelligence in this age of #ChatGPT. Judging from this real world burger story, this is urgent. If your school is interested in me coming to do something with them, just write to [email protected] and you'll join the tour schedule.
