Former JNU scholar Umar Khalid has approached the #SupremeCourt seeking bail in the 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case. It may be recalled that Khalid was denied bail last year and an embargo was imposed upon him to approach the Court after prosecution has examined protected witnesses and after 1 year, whichever is earlier. Khalid says the prosecution has failed to examine protected witnesses and 1 year embargo is about to expire, in such a scenario his prolonged incarceration would violate Article 21

Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam have been denied bail by the Delhi High Court again. But why? What did the court say while rejecting their fresh bail pleas? What did the Supreme Court’s January order have to do with today’s decision? And when can Khalid and Imam apply for bail again? What does it mean for Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam’s next chance at bail? @hey_eshwar explains. Umar Khalid recently wrote about his time in prison: thequint.com/opinion/umar-kh… And so did Sharjeel Imam: thequint.com/news/politics/s…

Very impressed by the courage of the Nalsar students. It’s not easy to do this, not only because of external threats, but even more because this is a profession where that constantly pressurises people to maintain conformity and defer to authority. etvbharat.com/amp/en/state/n…

On 21 September, a Division Bench of the Delhi High Court will hear the bail appeals of two men who have not been convicted of anything. Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid have both been in custody for over six years. Neither of them has been tried. No charge against them has been tested by cross-examination in these years. What has been tested, repeatedly, is how much of that fact the law is willing to look away from. thewire.in/rights/umar-khali…

Gems of the Indian Judiciary 🔥 Scholar Umar Khalid has been in prison for nearly six years without trial and continues to be denied bail. Meanwhile, Swatantra Bharadwaj, who publicly admitted on a live broadcast to an attempted murder, has been granted bail. What a striking contrast in the application of justice.

Father Stan Swamy DIED in jail awaiting trial - he was denied bail. Prof. Saibaba- a disabled man spent years in jail and died within 10 months of being released on bail- with no trial! Umar and Sharjeel have spent more than 6 years in jail awaiting trial- bail denied. Gulfisha, Meeran, Khalid Saifi and many others also spent years in jail before getting bail… they were/are all activists, intellectuals and /or students.. But koi goonda, rapist, murderer mil jaaye toh Indian Judiciary ko suddenly apna dharm yaad aa jata hai! Waah!!!! Utter sham!!

One gets bail within days despite being caught on camera. Other languishes in jail for six years without even a trial or hearing. Same justice system. Very different approach.

'Sometimes, I spiral into a bad place': Today marks six years of Umar Khalid in prison without trial. Here's what he said to friends and family. Six years in prison can sound like an enormous, almost incomprehensible stretch of time. But inside, Umar Khalid writes, time is experienced differently – through the heat that wakes him at night, the breathlessness that sends his body into panic, the books he reads, the music that brings back memories, and the waiting. "Most nights, the heat makes me wake up after a few hours from breathlessness. The thing about breathlessness is that it makes the otherwise involuntary breathing visible and shatters bodily transparency. The acute physical agony is completely invisible to anyone other than your body, and I might even go on to say that this overwhelming experience is total," he says. "Inside the prison, the heart induced breathlessness, or breathlessness by other causes, is taken as a part of the condition of the prisoner’s life. So, far from any medical intervention, you must take on the role of a medical expert and attempt an affective understanding of the physiology of your own body." Six years. No trial. What hurts more is how many Indians have already declared Umar Khalid guilty without even wanting to know the case against him. When being an Indian Muslim is enough to presume guilt, it is not just justice that has failed. India has.
