If I hadn’t been allowed to discover that books could be FUNNY, I never would’ve stuck around to discover all the OTHER things they can be. Letting kids read what THEY want is the best first step toward helping them fall in love with reading.

Scholastic asks, "Do you want to opt out of 'diverse' books at your school's next book fair?" Your participation in white supremacy has never been easier, just uncheck the 'diverse' books box– poof, no problems. 🙄

First book for break! It felt right to bring Legends of Lotus Island: The Guardian Test by @soontornvat to Koh Samui. Loved this book. The kids are already asking me when I can get #2 into Lao 🤣 #TLchat #inTLchat

Books, even bad ones, let you live another life for a few hundred pages.
They let you walk in the souls of people you may never meet and connect you in ways you might not expect.

I’m a librarian and I read picture books to big kids but I make sure to ask them deeper questions and tell them why I love reading this to them.

one of my 7th graders just brought back a book and said "I realized I didn't like scary books," as they checked out a happy romance. And, yet again, this is why WE TRUST STUDENTS WITH THEIR OWN READING CHOICES. I cannot stress enough that kids GET this.

From the books to the buildings, there is a fringe but dangerous faction out there that is bent on taking the right to safely use libraries away from us.
We can’t let that happen!

The report found almost half of LGBTQ+ youth, including over half of transgender and gender expansive youth, reported feeling unsafe in at least one school setting - however - almost 9 in 10 LGBTQ+ youth reported that they usually or always feel safe in their school library.
LGBTQ+ youth are #InAttendance across the country's schools, and nearly 13,000 of them participated in our Youth Report, helping us better understand their experiences and challenges in areas of life including their health and home life. Learn more: hrc.im/YouthReport2023 📲

“If you are upset about a book that discusses racism, then you should ask yourself, why? It challenges me and allows me to think; please do not deny me and my classmates a quality education.”

We were proud to fight alongside Arkansas library stakeholders to oppose SB81 in the legislature. We are thrilled to see this judicial ruling against enforcement today. It took real courage for the lead plaintiffs to stand up for what is right. Thanks to @DemocracyFwd for taking the case.

Removing libraries to better punish students!?!?
Is this really how we increase student achievement in America?
This is dystopian!

What do we say to our children and our children’s children if we are silent on this?
How can we claim to want to interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline and not see its rubrics here?

After two residents checked out every book in the library's Pride Month display to keep others from accessing them, boxes began to arrive containing new copies of the books, and the library received more than $15K in donations.
