Before Google’s arrival a few months ago, an estimated 250,000 trees occupied the 330 hectares (815 acres) of forest near Muhos in rural northern Finland. Now they are all gone, the tech company illegally stripped the entire area to build a datacentre theguardian.com/environment/…

Aside from the shocking substance of this story, what's amazing is how it was unearthed by Cole. The short version: The Russians were able to penetrate Jared Kushner's iPhone and extract screenshots and data. Then, a Russian intel official was captured by Dutch intelligence (!) and flipped. The Dutch believed Kushner may have been acting on behalf of Russia, so pursued him as an intel target and were able to get into his phone. They did not find any evidence of Russian collusion, instead they watched him moving hundreds of millions of dollars from slush funds created by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, one of them housed in Israel's central bank. Incredible reporting, and if Democrats have any sense, they will pull on these threads and learn a lot more about this money.
Explosive story many years in the making, now out in Vanity Fair by Matthew Cole (who will be on Breaking Points next week, and publishing soon in @DropSiteNews): Saudi Arabia and the UAE set up multi-billion slush funds for Jared Kushner to use. Iran-Contra 2 here (except with Iran-Contra, at least the US got some hostages released. Not clear what we got out of this one.)

Learned more about the making of the Blair Witch Project and I am SO angry on behalf of Mike, Josh and Heather. I am one of those people who saw it in the theater and was completely ignorant about how the film was actually made. All of the confusion and viral marketing around it led to so much misinformation and ambiguity, especially since their real names were used as the names of the characters they portrayed. These three young people were improvisational actors. They were NOT deceived or misled in order to get them to “act better.” They never felt genuinely scared or went truly hungry. Yes, they really camped and no, they were not given scripts, but they knew the general plot line and were given prompts every day to help them improvise. They had to be trained to use cameras. They filmed the entire movie, every scene, THEMSELVES with hand held cameras and without ANY director telling them what to do. It was all instinct and improvisation and acting their butts off. And they made creative storyline decisions that were brilliant and inspired. Michael C. Williams decided to kick the map into the river and he didn’t tell anyone, and he instinctively chose the moment when they were all laughing to inform Heather and Josh of what he did. He came up with that and it was a HUGE moment in the film that changed the trajectory. And Heather responded to it brilliantly, as well. Heather improvised her entire flashlight monologue and cried real tears, not because she was abused or genuinely frightened by the crew, but because she was a GOOD ACTOR. And after this film became huge and broke records for being the most profitable movie ever made, the studio screwed these kids out of a reasonable paycheck that would have changed their lives and been a drop in the bucket for the studio given how huge the profits were. The three young artists who made this movie everything it is did not have agents or representation, so they got nothing. Additionally, because of the way in which the film was marketed and all of the confusion around it, everyone (including other studios and casting directors) thought these three were not really acting. They assumed they were having real moments of hunger and terror and stress, because the studio wanted everyone to believe that. They FILMED and ACTED and WROTE and IMPROVISED a timeless classic, got no money and no credit for it. When the box office broke $100M, the studio sent them fruit baskets. 😭 Hollywood is truly malevolent. This has to be the biggest injustice in Hollywood history.

They broke Eisenhower’s globe because they didn’t want to wait for a team of specialist historians to move it. I cannot think of a more apt metaphor for Pete Hegseth’s DoD.
EXCLUSIVE: Pete Hegseth wanted Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s globe for his office. His staff broke it. We have photos.

Happy to see this reach a wider platform, but depressed by the comments, which misperceive this as a cash grab. My point, actually: When you buy the rights to a creative work, you don't buy authorship. You don't get to say that my ideas were your ideas. dailymail.com/tvshowbiz/arti…

This was masterful! Last week, they depicted a statue in Tallahassee, Florida of that major league racist crooked prick, Governor Ron DeSantis. That same day, the statue was crying as if the real Ron saw two black people on the same day. Then his hands and face started melting. The statue was made of gallium, which has the melting point of 86°F. The high that day was 89 degrees. This wasn't a mistake. It was done on purpose. On the inscription on the base of the statue it read, "H.R.1645" which was a state law signed by Pig DeSantis which mandated the erasure of the term "climate change" from all state laws. The inscription also had a DeSantis quote, "I am not a global warming person." The statue was erected by a climate activist group called 350 Action. They wanted to show the consequences of climate change and DeSantis ignoring it. The artist gave this statue the title, "Denial".

27 jobs. £0 off your energy bill. £billions for fossil fuel companies.
Sophy Ridge: "@ZackPolanski's also said [going ahead with Jackdaw], its only going to create 27 jobs. Is that right?" The energy secretary confirms that is correct

🚨 PLEASE SHARE! I've written to both my children's schools following the Government's antisemitism review. I WILL NOT accept genocide being presented as a two-sided political debate, or Palestinian history and suffering being erased from their education. I've drafted a template which I'm sharing for other parents to use or adapt. Political impartiality must NEVER become historical dishonesty. Please use them. Challenge your schools. Only last year, Andy Burnham signed the fossil fuel treaty in Manchester along with Massive Attack, saying, "There should be no turning away from net zero, in my view." He’s just another politician who says one thing when it’s politically convenient, then does the opposite.

I've only just discovered the story of Jack Barth, the original creator of Yesterday, and Christ alive, it's one of the most grotesquely ironic stories I've ever encountered in the film industry. For those unfamiliar with it, Barth was a struggling screenwriter who conceived an ingenious premise: a musician wakes up in a world where The Beatles never existed, realises he's the only person who remembers their songs, and starts passing them off as his own. Barth wrote the screenplay, originally titled Cover Version. After decades of trying to break into the film industry, he finally sold it. Enter Richard Curtis. Curtis rewrote the screenplay, transforming Barth's rather melancholy examination of artistic failure into a crowd-pleasing romantic comedy. Curtis received sole screenplay credit, while Barth was left sharing a story by credit with the considerably more famous writer. Now, Barth agreed to this arrangement. That's important. But what happened afterwards is what makes the whole business so bloody unpleasant. Curtis subsequently described receiving little more than a one-sentence premise, despite Barth's original screenplay containing several remarkably specific elements that survived into the finished film, including the elderly John Lennon and the Harry Potter gag. Barth has argued that his contribution was systematically minimised, leaving him struggling to convince people that he created the story in the first place. And here's where the irony becomes so vicious that Kafka himself would probably have rejected it for being too fucking obvious. In Barth's original version, the protagonist DOESN'T become enormously successful. He possesses the greatest collection of songs in popular music history and STILL struggles to make it. It's a story about the cruel indifference of artistic success. About how creative talent and commercial recognition are frequently separated by circumstances beyond an artist's control. Then Barth watches his own creation become an international hit, with another writer receiving the lion's share of the acclaim. And now, six years after Barth publicly complained about the whole miserable business, Yesterday is becoming a West End musical. Judging by his reaction today, the news appears to have come as something of a surprise to him. Fucking hell. I appreciate that contracts exist. I appreciate that Curtis substantially rewrote the film. I even appreciate that Barth received payment and agreed to the credits. But there's something profoundly depressing about an industry that can take a struggling writer's original screenplay, turn it into a multimillion-pound success, and leave that writer feeling practically invisible. And now the machinery is apparently gearing up to do it all over again, this time with jazz hands. As for Richard Curtis, a gigantic FUCK YOU.
