*Must watch* - Caroline Lucas dismantling the case for more North Sea oil and gas drilling on tonight’s Newsnight.
Tim Montgomerie interjects, Lucas corrects him, and he acknowledges that she is right—before simply doubling down on the same argument anyway.
Charlotte Pickles then offers a largely incoherent defence of her position. When her political background is raised - she previously worked at Iain Duncan Smith’s Centre for Social Justice and advised him in government- she objects to being described as being on the right.
It probably doesn’t help that she shares her name with the Rugrats and All Grown Up! character Charlotte Pickles—who, rather fittingly, is also a CEO, in her case of the fictional multinational Merge Corp. 🤷♂️
Throughout the discussion, Lucas repeatedly challenges the claims made by Montgomerie and Pickles. Yet she is continually interrupted, prevented from completing her answers and cut off so the programme can return to the other two guests.
Tonight’s episode was another reminder of how far Newsnight has fallen. A programme once renowned for rigorous questioning and clear, accurate analysis increasingly substitutes poorly moderated confrontation for genuine scrutiny.
That is a tragedy for one of Britain’s former flagship current-affairs programmes, and a disservice to the public it is supposed to inform.

I crossed the Sahara Desert with migrants about a decade ago. Those in the video who crossed into Ceuta from Morocco neither looked like migrants (no luggage) nor did they behave like migrants (went back home with no protest). They looked like a rent-a-mob from Morocco's al-karyan, engineered to cross over and create a diplomatic crisis for Spain? Why? Well, ask the Israeli government, whose Moroccan partner is ever ready to create an embarrassment for the @sanchezcastejon government as a consequence of its position on the genocide of the Palestinians. Remember when the Moroccan King did the same thing in 2021 when the Spanish government arranged for medical care of Brahim Ghali (leader of @Polisario_).

I need to explain something very important to you.
The law that the govt used to arrest me, Section 12(1A) — the first ever use against a journalist — is a very short line. It is vague on purpose. And that is the exact line they have copied into the new "National Security Bill"

Thread of Israeli "journalists" that CPJ will continue to recognize after this change they are making to protect Israel / their own racism.
1/ Lital Shimesh, Israel's Channel 14
NEW: The Board of Directors at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will formally change its definition of who qualifies as a journalist, to broadly exclude slain Palestinian and Lebanese journalists who worked for government-funded media outlets. Israeli, American, and Ukrainian journalists who work for state-funded outlets or are embedded with the military will remain recognized as journalists, of course.
The move was catalyzed to appease the right-wing Zionist rag The Free Beacon, which has repeatedly accused Palestinian and Lebanese journalists of being undercover militants or used their political opinions or affiliations as justification for their killing by the IOF.
This is a racist scandal of massive proportions for everyone involved, and it makes a mockery of the purported mission of the organization. It is absolutely abhorrent that the organization’s resources are wasted on this cowardly witch-hunt, at a moment in history that is the deadliest for journalists, especially in Palestine and Lebanon.
The Rape Inquiry heard from 20 witnesses who are the subject of case studies in the report.
Astonishingly only 2 of those 20 were sexually abused for the first time by a member of a Pakistani grooming gang.
The vast majority were first sexually abused by white men.

PUBLIC STATEMENT: Femi Mohammed – Speaking Out as a Muslim Participant of MP Rupert Lowe’s CrowdFunded Rape Gang Inquiry.
PART 1
I am speaking out in the public interest, not only as a survivor myself, but for all women and girls of colour, Black and Muslim, whose voices have been systematically erased from the narrative of justice and accountability.
I was encouraged to participate in Rupert Lowe’s Rape Gang Inquiry by Sammy Woodhouse, who was contacted by a family member regarding my cases. I submitted evidence starting in August 2025 and participated in stages 1 and 2 of the inquiry, signing consent forms for my inclusion. My communications took place via phone, messaging, email, video, and Teams meetings with Sammy Woodhouse, Nat Enderby, and Marlon West, during which I detailed my sexual assault, threats, and attacks on my life, and the corruption, collusion, and manipulation of my cases by institutional authorities who were supposed to protect me.
After a call from Marlon West informing me that I had been allocated to give evidence at the hearings in London, a Teams meeting was held on the 7th January 2026 with Marlon West, Nat Enderby, and myself to discuss my victim statement, which I completed on the 8th January 2026.
On the 23rd January 2026, Sammy Woodhouse personally messaged me to invite me to attend the inquiry hearings on the 4th February 2026, between 2–3 pm. I accepted the invitation on the 24th January 2026, and Sammy booked my train tickets, emailing them to me on the 26th January 2026. (Please see images for evidence)
Within two days, everything changed, and I was removed from attending the hearings. On the 28th January 2026, I received a text message from Sammy Woodhouse asking me to call her; having spoken to her on numerous occasions, she did not seem her usual self and failed to provide a reason for my exclusion. Sammy Woodhouse is someone I had a lot of respect for, and it became apparent to me that the decision had come from someone at the top of the Inquiry. I felt betrayed and violated and was left in a state of shock, confusion, and despair.
On the 29th January 2026, I received a generic email from Sammy Woodhouse stating that I would not be required to give evidence. The email was sent via Kerie, one of The Rape Gang Inquiry support advocates, rather than directly from Inquiry Lead Sammy Woodhouse herself. It offered no explanation for my removal post-selection. I responded directly to Sammy and Kerie, requesting clarification; Kerie replied that she would speak to Sammy and get back to me.
The call from Kerie never came and I received no further communication from Sammy Woodhouse. On the 3rd February 2026, concerned about how my information would be used, I requested confirmation that my contributions and documents be permanently withdrawn from the inquiry records. (Please see images attached in Part 2, for evidence)
My removal is not an isolated incident; it is part of a broader pattern of discrimination, racial profiling, and the silencing of women of colour, especially female Muslim victims, within the victim and survivor movement. Despite my efforts to bring these issues to light by reaching out to other survivors, I have faced a deliberate attempt to suppress my voice and experience. This reflects a disturbing trend where the narrative of sexual exploitation and violence is often confined to a narrow group of victims, driven by those who financially and publicly benefit from our trauma. In this system, it has become big business, where division is created and profit is made from the perpetual suffering of victims and survivors.

New on Substack: How to Beat the Algorithmic Fascist Beast
Rupert Lowe posted one word and got sixty million views.
Here's why that number is a lie, and what you can do about it:
X's algorithm does not read sentiment. It reads engagement.
Your angry reply is algorithmically identical to a supportive one. Every dunk, every quote-tweet, every "can you believe this" is rocket fuel for the content you oppose.
Peer-reviewed research in PNAS, ACM FAccT, and a MDPI systematic review of 30 studies all confirm X's algorithm amplifies right-wing content by default. The PNAS study found this replicated across seven countries.
A pre-registered experiment (Milli et al., 2025, PNAS Nexus) found the algorithm amplifies "emotionally charged, out-group hostile content" that users themselves say they don't want to see. The algorithm overrides your preferences.
Analysis of the 2026 open-sourced code found that mass blocking acts as a negative quality signal: "If many people block you, the algorithm treats it as a quality signal and reduces your distribution more broadly".
Based on these documented mechanics, mass blocking would collapse engagement rates, degrade algorithmic quality scores, and sever the pipeline that pushes far-right content into centrist feeds.
This applies to the whole network: Lowe, Farage, Reform, Restore Britain, Tate, Robinson, GB News, and every mid-tier amplification node in between.
The far right needs your outrage. Without it, sixty million becomes a fraction. The algorithm only runs if you feed it.
Block. Mute. Don't engage. Starve the machine. And more importantly, take action in the real world.

The left-wing amateur club Easton Cowboys & Cowgirls, based in Bristol, came up with the idea of travelling to Chiapas to play football with the Zapatistas in 1998. In 1999, the club took advantage of the “sporting activities” exemption in the Mexican government's travel restrictions on foreigners and visited the autonomous Zapatista villages in Chiapas.
There, the English footballers played matches throughout the day against masked Zapatista teams in mountain villages inhabited by Indigenous communities. In the evenings, they gathered around campfires to share their experiences, struggles and stories.
Among those who took part in these visits was the future world-famous street artist Banksy. Banksy served as the team's reserve goalkeeper during the matches and, afterwards, painted murals in the villages where Indigenous people lived.

We know this is X and you tend to talk out of your arse, Lowe, so this is for any who care for facts.
You called human beings "third world savages" and promised to retrospectively prosecute anyone who "knowingly placed" them in our communities. The obvious question is: who actually placed them?
The Home Office asylum dispersal system operates through three private contractors: Clearsprings Ready Homes, Serco, and Mears. They source the accommodation and allocate the placements. Below them sit local authority staff, caseworkers, and landlords carrying out duties under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999. People on £27,000 to £33,000 a year. Those are the people you want to send to prison. Retrospectively.
Now let us ask who you left out. Those same three companies have made £383 million in collective profit from contracts whose total cost has tripled from £4.5 billion to £15.3 billion.
Clearsprings alone posted £119 million in pre-tax profit in a single year and told Parliament that hotel accommodation is "more profitable than longer-term housing". They placed asylum seekers in communities. That was the contract. They are nowhere in your tweet. The caseworker who followed the law gets prison. The company that banked nine figures gets nothing. Curious, that.
Your own party might clarify things:
Gavin Williamson joined your advisory board. His parliamentary register of interests still lists the role. He was Secretary of State for Defence, sitting in Cabinet, when those very contracts were signed on 8 January 2019.
Susan Hall, Conservative leader on the London Assembly, also joined.
Among your councillors: Maxine Fothergill, eight years a Conservative councillor in Bexley.
Paul Thomas, who stood as a Conservative candidate in Maidstone.
Maria Bowtell, elected as a Conservative councillor in 2023, now your Head of Governance. Former Conservatives.
And in May 2025, you told the press you were "open to joining the Conservative Party" after lunching with Robert Jenrick. The party that designed, signed, and operated the system you now call criminal. You were not trying to prosecute then, you were trying to join them.
Your concern for British communities is so touching it would be rude not to test it against the facts.
A study by the Glasgow Centre for Population Health and the University of Glasgow, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, found 335,000 excess deaths across Great Britain between 2012 and 2019 attributable to austerity. A separate LSE study estimated 190,000 causally linked to spending cuts over the same decade.
The DWP conducted secret reviews into 69 suicides of benefit claimants. Analysis by Disability News Service suggested the true number may exceed 750 in a single year.
Errol Graham starved to death in 2018 after his benefits were stopped. Philippa Day was found collapsed beside a letter rejecting her claim, with 28 documented errors. British citizens. Dead in their own homes. No retrospective prosecution. Not from you.
Your outrage is remarkably selective, Lowe. It appears when the victim is white and the perpetrator is not. It fades when the pattern reverses. It vanishes entirely when British citizens die from policy decisions made in Westminster. You do not care about victims. You care about which victims are useful to you. You don't care for justice. You care for converting anger to votes, like all politically pathetic grifters do.
You want the prosecution, or in fact, the persecution, of workers while the corporations that profited walk free. You are a vile and pathetic hypocrite.
The revelations about Samantha Jones’ private interests are astonishing.
☹️ adviser to Carnall Farrar, a healthcare consultancy that is part of a consortium with sinister US tech giant Palantir

We don't think anyone working in Health in government should have financial interests in private health or social care companies.

I'm a cardiologist. A 42-year-old mother of two came to my office complaining of jaw pain and crushing fatigue. She ran half-marathons. Her EKG was normal. Another doctor had sent her home with anxiety medication.
When I got her into the cath lab, I found severe microvascular disease — plaque choking the tiniest vessels of her heart, the ones standard angiograms routinely miss.
Her heart had been starving in silence while everyone told her she was stressed.
She is alive today. Too many women like her are not.
Heart disease kills more women than every cancer combined. And medicine is still diagnosing it through a male lens.
84% of cardiologists report having patients in the past year whose heart disease was misdiagnosed by another physician. Women with a STEMI heart attack have a 59% greater chance of being misdiagnosed compared to men. Women with an NSTEMI — 41% greater chance.
The reason is structural. For decades, we screened, tested, and treated women using a template built for men.
Men's heart attacks announce themselves — the crushing chest pain, the clutched fist, the Hollywood collapse. Women's hearts whisper. Crushing fatigue that feels like wearing a lead vest. Jaw pain written off as TMJ. Nausea blamed on a stomach bug. An ache between the shoulder blades blamed on a long week. Shortness of breath blamed on being out of shape.
For years, medicine called these "atypical" symptoms. They are not atypical. They are female-typical. Half of humanity is not a variant.
And the biology runs deeper than symptoms.
Women have smaller hearts and narrower coronary arteries. Plaque doesn't only clog the big highway vessels — it hides in the microvasculature, the tiny branches feeding the heart muscle itself. A woman can have a heart attack with a completely "clean" standard angiogram.
SCAD — spontaneous coronary artery dissection — occurs 90% of the time in women. Often young, fit women with zero traditional risk factors. It's the leading cause of heart attack in women under 50, accounting for roughly one quarter of all cases in that age group. Most doctors have never diagnosed one.
And some of the most dangerous cardiac risk factors are hidden in women's medical histories where no one thinks to look:
Preeclampsia or gestational hypertension doubles to quadruples lifetime heart disease and stroke risk. Pregnancy is the body's first cardiac stress test — and these complications are early warning sirens, not closed chapters.
Autoimmune disease — lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis — far more common in women, turbocharges inflammation and plaque formation at any age.
Cardiovascular disease in women aged 20-44 is projected to surge nearly 50% by 2050.
The youngest patients in my practice keep getting younger.
What every woman should ask her doctor — and what every doctor should be asking:
"Given my pregnancy history, autoimmune status, and family history — what is my full cardiovascular risk?" If they don't ask about preeclampsia or gestational diabetes, volunteer it.
"Should I have an Lp(a) test and a coronary calcium score?" Standard cholesterol panels miss too much. Lp(a) is genetic, one-time, and most women have never been tested.
"My tests came back normal but my symptoms haven't stopped — what's next?" Normal stress tests and angiograms can miss microvascular disease, spasm, and SCAD. Persistent symptoms warrant coronary CT angiography or cardiac MRI.
And if something feels wrong — say these exact words to your doctor: "I am concerned this could be my heart."
That single sentence changes the workup. Do not soften it. Do not apologize for it.
80% of heart disease is preventable. But the playbook has to be built for female biology.
Two decades ago, I wrote one of the first books warning that heart disease was the number one killer of women and that medicine was diagnosing it through a male lens. It was recognized by First Lady Laura Bush at the White House during the early years of the national conversation about women's heart health.
I'm haunted by how much of that book I could republish today unchanged.
The science has advanced. The awareness has grown. But the gap between what we know and what happens in the exam room is still costing women their lives.
Share this with every woman you love — and every doctor who treats them. READ MORE: open.substack.com/pub/afshin…

Crazy that this is getting barely any coverage. This year’s European Press Prize was just awarded to an investigative report by the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. It is entitled “What the Wounds Tell” and in it the journalists Maud Effting and Willem Feenstra document the cases of 114 children in Gaza under the age of 15 who were struck by a single bullet to the head or chest. Almost all of them died or were left severely disabled. They chose to document only the cases of boys and girls under the age of 15 (though often much younger: aged 3, 4 or 7) because these are children who can be immediately identified as such. “A single bullet in these parts of the body is a clear indication that these children were deliberately targeted“, the two journalists write.
