The demonization of memorization is one of the top ~3 reasons that we have become retarded as a society. Memorization is like pumping iron for your brain and you inevitably also come to understand/internalize what you memorize. It shouldn’t be limited to vocabulary and times tables either. It should be poems in foreign languages, the ability to trace maps by hand from memory, timelines and dates, etc.
Memorization has an unfairly negative reputation. I recently spent a few hours memorizing the names of all the countries in the world and it's such a clear improvement in how well I can understand and reason about other topics. Memorization is scaffolding for more complex ideas

From Louis de Robien's diary of the Russian Revolution. Some people foresaw what was coming but were unfortunately unable to change the outcome.

The year 536 was wild. It's tempting to think that with our modern knowledge and technology we'd fair better, but I suspect our interconnected dependencies would more than offset these advantages.

the breakthroughs in CF have been absolutely astonishing
whenever people talk about euthanasia I can’t help but remember this youtuber with CF who was coming to terms with fact that she had 3-4 increasingly painful years left to live max then 3 months later a groundbreaking new treatment dropped out of the blue

In times past cigarettes acted as an important currency in underground black markets. Given that they are less popular today in the US, do you believe they would serve the same roll (revert to a valuable medium of exchange) or would something else fill the void? Comment below.

OpenAI and Anthropic’s models are so magical and mystical and dangerous, they can do anything! They may even destroy the world! The only thing they can’t do, funny enough, is generate positive cash flow. And that’s where the US Taxpayer comes in!

He threw himself into a corner of the stairwell of the 22nd floor, after coming down from the 64th floor, when the building started to collapse around him. He said he prayed to God to protect his pregnant wife, and to make his death quick. He woke up on a ledge 40 feet above the ground. His perch in the corner had sheered off and somehow stayed above the cloud of rubble as it "surfed" down the wave of debris to it's resting place. He and his wife had a daughter.
An engineer named Pasquale Buzzeli, who was on the 22nd floor of the North Tower at the time of its collapse 90 minutes ago, awakens from an unconsciousness and wanders out of the wreckage and into the arms of rescuers. Miraculously, he was not seriously harmed despite the tower collapsing on top of him. He tells reporters afterward that as he staggered out of the wreckage, he heard “people screaming,” but could only see smoke and rubble. It is believed that many more people may be alive in the rubble.

The World Trade Center towers stood for 56 and 102 minutes after being struck on September 11 2001 - long enough for approximately 17,400 people to evacuate - because their tube-frame structural design distributed load effectively even after severe damage to the core. The buildings were not designed to survive this scenario, but the engineers who designed them built in enough structural redundancy that the towers gave thousands of people time to escape.

Posting clips from the Naudet Bros 9/11 documentary, this scene shows the extreme degree of heroism and selflessness of the firefighters as they recognize in the early confusion that there’s a huge fire up on the 90th floor or so, and they’re going to need to climb up there with all their gear. Each guy they interview, almost nonchalantly, says “we’ll go up there and deal with it, we’ll get to it.” These guys carrying full hose packs (50-100+ lbs) their SCBA, all their tools, just focused on getting up 70 floors to people and helping them. Elite Americans, they planned to climb over an hour just to reach people before they got to work saving them.

Everyone alive and above a certain age remembers where they were, and what they were doing. If you weren't alive, or are too young to remember this should be enough to tell you about the enormity of what happened.

Two of my friends became anxious during lockdowns and purchased Xanax laced with fentanyl and died. Multiple friends businesses closed forever. Multiple friends became alcoholics and drug addicts. Multiple friends romantic relationships dissolved (mine included.) multiple people caught a glimpse into the nature of what lengths their friend groups were willing to go to to comply with the state by sacrificing their close friendships. That's not even beginning to get into the effect lockdowns had on children. This was a major cataclysmic event and any reports otherwise are revisionist and condescending to the extreme hardship and devastation that they caused.
I wasn't a lockdown fan (see below). But there is now a social contagion of right-wing men imagining they were deeply, traumatized by lockdowns, rather than affronted, put out, annoyed. Some, I'm sure, had trauma-worthy lockdowns. Most of you are simple hysterics.
