The Mario Kart Tour Archive #2: The Tour Begins #MarioKartTour On September 25, 2019, Mario Kart Tour officially launched with the start of its first tour, "New York Tour", which ran from September 25, 2019, to October 8, 2019. At launch, the game already included a good amount of new and returning content. Notable additions included Pauline and Peachette making their Mario Kart series debuts, Diddy Kong returning after his long absence since Mario Kart Wii, and the first of many driver costumes and variants with Mario (Musician). Many karts and gliders returned from previous games in the series alongside several new ones, including new variants of some existing karts and gliders. There were also several new items introduced as special items, such as the Double Bob-ombs, Banana Barrels, Mushroom Cannon, and Bubble. It also featured the return of several special items from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, including the Yoshi Egg, Bowser Shell, Heart, and Giant Banana. The Lucky Seven item also returned from Mario Kart 7 for the first time as a special item, used by drivers such as Pauline and King Boo. With this tour, we also got a brand-new course called New York Minute. As the name implies, this course is based on New York City, New York, United States. The course itself features a lot of Donkey Kong theming and may have taken partial inspiration from New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey. New York Minute is a fairly short and straightforward course, as is tradition for many starting courses in the Mario Kart series. Throughout the course, players can spot iconic New York landmarks such as Times Square, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Broadway, the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty, etc. The launch of Mario Kart Tour also introduced many new features never before seen in the Mario Kart series, including frenzies, combos, a tier-based point system, ranked cups, item shops, and challenges, which are similar to the missions from Mario Kart DS. Returning for the first time since Mario Kart: Double Dash!! are the aforementioned special items, with each driver having their own unique special item, although some are shared by multiple drivers. It is also the first game since Mario Kart 7 to not allow players to customize their kart's wheels. As with the other handheld Mario Kart games, bikes are not included this time around. Within 24 hours of its launch, Mario Kart Tour generated approximately 20 million downloads, making it Nintendo's biggest mobile game launch to date. The game's first-day installs even tripled those of Super Mario Run. Within its first week, the game reached 90 million downloads, and within its first month, it had amassed approximately 124 million downloads.

Fun fact: The 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Booster Course Pass' DLC gets its name from Mario Kart Tour's internal development codename, which was 'booster'. Using 'booster' within the name makes perfect sense with the theme of the DLC being to bring tracks from Tour into 8 Deluxe.
