How does a thermal camera see in complete darkness? Every object with a temperature above absolute zero (−273 °C) emits infrared energy. The higher the surface temperature, the more intense the radiation. A thermal camera captures it and turns it into an image.

▪️ Microbolometer: the “heart.” Converts IR-induced temperature changes into an electric signal. ▪️ Image processing: a processor amplifies the signal into the operator’s thermal image. ▪️ Cables: the “nervous system.” Kurbas cameras offer shielded cables for stability under EMI.

Ukraine’s defense industry has become a global leader in drone warfare. But this advantage has a weak spot: electronics that are still made in China, Russia’s key ally. That’s the subject of a new @AP piece featuring comments from Andrii Taganskyi, VP of Product at @SystemsOdd.

Formally, Chinese parts make up just 5% of all components, but “without those 5%, there is no camera.” That’s why Odd Systems’ ultimate goal is full technological sovereignty: its own sensors, its own lenses, and a plant to produce them.

Kurbas, the most widely used Ukrainian-made thermal camera on the frontline, is taking a step toward U.S. production. @thefourthlawai & @SystemsOdd have signed an MoU with American defense tech company Performance Drone Works (@PDW_ai).

Today, Kurbas is supplied to more than 200 drone manufacturers. It flies on many types of unmanned systems, from Shahed interceptors to strike drones. As a reminder, our team is at @AUSAorg 2026 in Washington, D.C. this week, including Igor Nakonechnyi, CEO of Project Foundation.

Why does your thermal video feed suddenly freeze? Here’s the thing. To remove noise and heat artifacts, the camera periodically closes and reopens a built-in shutter. It’s called the sensor’s auto-calibration or NUC (Non-Uniformity Correction).

What you can do now: ▪️ Move control to the remote: turn off auto-calibration completely and trigger sensor correction manually. ▪️ Fine-tune the automation: set your own shutter triggers (by time interval or temperature change) for a specific flight scenario.

Now you decide when to calibrate the sensor. No unexpected freezes mid-maneuver or on the final approach. The feed stays continuous. Watch the video to compare standard auto-calibration with manual control on the Kurbas-640β in practice.
