🚨BREAKING: UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is open to slavery reparations payments
Andy Burnham is open to increasing financial assistance for Commonwealth countries to help atone for Britain’s role in the slave trade.
In a break with previous government policy he will consider demands for investment in healthcare and education from African and Caribbean countries.
He has ruled out paying a lump sum towards reparations but will offer a structured dialogue and listen to calls for development funding.
Commonwealth leaders described his openness to a formal apology as an essential first step towards a deal. No extra aid will be paid this financial year but future settlements could include taxpayer funded projects in health or education.
The UK already sends large aid packages including £75 million to Nigeria this year.
