🇨🇳 🐕 GOOD NEWS: TWO CHINESE CITIES TAKE STEPS AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY Amid the heartbreaking stories of animal abuse coming out of China, here’s some encouraging news. Two Chinese cities have adopted new regulations explicitly prohibiting the abuse and abandonment of dogs. ✅ SANYA, HAINAN • Explicitly prohibits abusing and abandoning dogs. • Introduces fines of ¥500–1,000 for abandonment if owners fail to comply with an order to rectify it. • Bans offenders from keeping dogs for FIVE YEARS. ✅ HUAI’AN, JIANGSU • Explicitly prohibits dog abuse and abandonment. • Introduces fines of ¥500–2,000 for abandoning dogs. • Prohibits adopters from abusing, abandoning or selling adopted dogs. ⚠️ BUT THERE’S STILL A MAJOR GAP. Neither regulation establishes a specific standalone penalty for abusing a dog. And neither provides the comprehensive protections needed to address atrocities like what happened to Wang Wang and her puppies. China still lacks a national law generally criminalizing deliberate cruelty to companion animals. But these developments matter. They demonstrate that Chinese lawmakers CAN explicitly prohibit animal abuse. The next step is to make those prohibitions enforceable, with meaningful consequences for perpetrators. I want to recognize the tireless efforts of Chinese animal advocates who continue pushing for stronger protections. Progress deserves recognition. But recognition must never become complacency.
