The Republican identity will certainly be chaotic going into 2028 with Vance/Tucker/Thiel attempting to execute their 4 year plan to hijack the party. There will also be the Rubio trad Zio wing that really doesn’t seem to have much going for it aside from the same Boomers that just lost the midterm.
While this chaos presents a unique opportunity for a potentially disruptive candidate to rise, it simultaneously burdens that individual with almost insurmountable challenges if they are to succeed. The easy way out for whoever wins will be “hyper centralization”, and most would choose that path.
I guess another way to think about it is that whoever takes power next better be someone who understands the moment beyond “universal healthcare” and “corporate tax cuts” and possess the fortitude to deal with the pressure.
my friend & i were discussing how just few months ago it felt like the democratic presidential bench was just very very empty besides aoc & gavin (both are sort of eccentric in many ways & also at least somewhat polarizing).
but the midterms produced three more viable presidential candidates (tallarico, ossoff, & el-sayed) who interestingly enough all have the necessary requirements & then some to be a future nominee (maybe not in 2028).
they all seem to understand culture, they have the ability to communicate & debate with simplicity & vigor, & they seem likable enough overall to the general populace.
whereas on the republican side besides rubio (maybe vance) you don't really feel this as much. the post trump republican identity will be definitively be chaotic, wonder how it settles.
