Even Count Binface's entertaining campaign to unseat Nigel Farage in the recent Clacton by-election couldn't motivate more than a 44 per cent turnout: Farage won not quite two-thirds of those votes.
Including the 56 per cent who didn't vote, in the end Nigel was the choice of less than three in ten eligible Clacton voters: hardly the vindicating 'overwhelming endorsement' he claimed desperately on polling night.

Unless she can show the source of her claimed quote, Pauline Hanson should apologise unreservedly to Tim Fischer's family.
Tim Fischer was one of the nicest and most decent people I've ever met and worked with, and him saying what she claimed is unimaginable. #auspol – at Melbourne, Victoria

But if the pair felt a touch of love today and assume that Australians generally share that affection, they are mistaken. A petition entitled ‘No taxpayer-funded or official support for Harry and Meghan’s private visit to Australia’, garnered 45,000 signatures, and a very defensive response from the Sussex camp before they arrived. The trip is all privately-funded, they insist; but tell that to Australian taxpayers stuck with the cost of a police presence, and the costs of the arrangements for hosting the Sussexes at the Royal Children’s Hospital and the other quasi-royal events during their Australian visit.
And it hasn’t been lost on the Australian public that the Sussexes are here for several lucrative commercial events, with price tags for attendees that can only be afforded by commercial and social elites – photos with the couple extra, of course.

Spare a thought for these brave women and their families. #auspol
In 1989, as tanks rolled into central Beijing to crush the pro-democracy protest in Tiananmen Square, Australia’s then prime minister, Bob Hawke, spontaneously offered asylum to all Chinese citizens who happened to be in Australia. Thousands took up his offer and made lasting contributions to the country that gave them shelter.
On Tuesday, Hawke’s successor, Anthony Albanese, granted five women of Iran’s national football team asylum, and offered it to all those in the team’s party. Unlike Hawke, however, Albanese did the right thing only after being pressured by Australian public opinion and, if you accept his version of events, US president Donald Trump.

This video deserves the widest possible viewership across the Anglosphere. Canada is fortunate to have @PierrePoilievre in her public life and contest of ideas. So very impressive.
Albanese is right about Andrew and his vile character. But he wrote to Starmer, committing Australia on a serious constitutional issue without first doing the courtesy of advising the Leader of the Opposition and state premiers. That was high-handed and arrogant. #auspol
'Australians don’t want a bar of this bloke, frankly.’ That’s what Australia’s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said today after calling for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to be banished from the line of succession to the throne.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Australians are revolted by the abundant evidence of Mountbatten-Windsor’s relationship with the disgraced financier and paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein.

This Age/SMH piece is a lazy trawl of One Nation's website. But then One Nation's website is just a lazy collection of thought bubbles, with no real policies attached. Laughable. #auspol

The fourth attack was actually inside Sydney Harbour, where shark attacks are very rare.
A 12-year-old boy was swimming not far off a beach in the eastern suburb of Vaucluse when he was attacked and severely mauled around his arms and torso.

I've written this for the AFR. Both polls today tell the same story for the Liberals, although the Newspoll putting performative populists One Nation just ahead of the Coalition is probably a rogue or one-off result. But we'll see.
Ley leads a hopelessly divided Liberal party at war with itself. She’s had more positions on combating hate speech than the Kama Sutra, and none as satisfying. ebx.sh/tndmop
It's good to discuss how best to make Labor MPs understand the depth of feeling and grief in Australia's Jewish community. Shutting them out doesn't help that, so I respectfully disagree with the AJA's stance on this - but understand why they took it.
"I want them to see what they have done" - AJA's call discussed on Sky News
Policy consultant Terry Barnes joined Jaimee Rogers who is filling in for Peta Credlin on Sky News and was asked about a recent call from AJA for federal Labor ministers to be banned from Jewish events while they refuse to listen to the Jewish community and support a Royal Commission into the Bondi Chanukah massacre.
Barnes said that AJA is "a very sound organisation" but that he disagreed with the call and that Labor ministers should be exposed to the Jewish community's grief, quoting Jackie Kennedy saying "I want them to see what they have done."

I heard @RichardWelchMP on Friday and was very impressed. He has the ability and real-world experience to be Shadow Treasurer & develop & sell budget repair for Victoria, caring about doing Victoria's numbers & not his own. #springst
The most important decision Jess Wilson will make is the appointment of the Shadow Treasurer.
It can’t be Newbury, or his immediate predecessor, Brad Rowswell.
But at the Nicholls conference, I think I saw the solution to this personnel problem: the Liberals’ industrial relations spokesman, Richard Welch.

Militarists calling out militarism. It would be a joke if it wasn't so serious.
The international community must stay highly vigilant and resolutely thwart any attempt to revive militarism, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday in response to a related query about the recent provocative remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan. #JapanProvocation
Analysts have pointed out that among all the prime ministers of Japan, Takaichi was the first to clearly state a "Taiwan contingency" could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan. In such an event, Japan may invoke the so-called right to collective self-defense to interfere militarily in the Taiwan Strait.
Mao said the right of collective self-defense set forth in the UN Charter is created to safeguard the collective security of the international community and prevent the revival of fascist forces. Japan has been restricted from exercising this right since the end of World War Two.
She said that a review of history shows that launching aggression against other countries under the pretext of a "survival-threatening situation" and "self-defense" has always been a convenient tactic of Japanese militarism.
She went on to point out that in 1931, Japan called whether it could seize "Manchuria" as "survival-threatening" and used that as a pretext to carry out the September 18th Incident and invade and occupy Northeast China. Japan later claimed that to defend "the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" was an existential battle for Japan, enlarging its war of aggression to the entirety of Asia. Whether to attack Pearl Harbor was also deemed as "survival-threatening" to Japan, which ignited the Pacific War.
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the international community must be highly vigilant and resolutely thwart any attempt to revive militarism and jointly safeguard the post-war international order and world peace, Mao added.
Would yet another change of Vic Lib leader change anything? From the petty power games I observed at Lib State Council a month ago, I think not. Unless they're prepared to do hard work on a comprehensive policy manifesto to bring Victoria back from the brink - not just law & order - they will lose yet again, and fail all Victorians. #springst

Get real, mate. There'll soon be millions more Australians disconnecting whether they want to or not. AI will steal their jobs and make them obsolete, and Labor has no clue and fails to anticipate the human and social costs of the AI "revolution". #auspol
