A fantastic view from the observation car at the rear of the Royal Blossom as we crossed one of the viaducts over Pasak Chonlasit Reservoir. The water is very high at this time of year, stretching as far as the eye can see on both sides. It really does feel as though the train is floating on water. The highlight of my day was riding in the Beyond Horizon luxury carriage on its first commercial trip, attached to the steam heritage train to Ayutthaya. This Thai-made carriage has both 1st and 2nd Class seating, arranged in 1+1 and 1+2 configurations respectively. It was developed by King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), working with Thai industry and SRT, to demonstrate Thailand’s ability to design and build its own passenger carriages. I was lucky to get a ticket. There are only eight seats in 1st Class, and I kept refreshing the booking website as the 8:30am release approached. By the time I got in, just three seats remained. I managed to reserve mine before the whole carriage sold out within seconds. My 1st Class ticket cost 999 baht, which was less than I’d expected. It was good to be back on the Royal Blossom for a “Floating Train” experience this morning. It’s still only October, but the water level at Pasak Chonlasit Reservoir is already very high. As the train crosses a series of viaducts, all you can see through the windows on both sides is water. It really does feel as though you’re floating across the reservoir. 🚂 SRT Governor Anan Phonimdaeng flags off sold-out steam excursion for King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day, with Beyond Horizon carriage attached for the first time On 23 October 2026, State Railway of Thailand (SRT) Governor Anan Phonimdaeng presided over a ceremony paying respects at the monument commemorating the inauguration of the Royal Railway, before flagging off the special Bangkok–Ayutthaya–Bangkok steam excursion. The trip marked King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day, honouring King Rama V, who laid the foundations of Thailand’s railways. All seats sold out, and the excursion featured the Beyond Horizon carriage alongside the steam locomotives for the first time. Visitors gathered to watch and photograph steam locomotives Nos. 824 and 850, built by Nippon Sharyo in Japan after the Second World War. Both are maintained at Thonburi Locomotive Depot for use on special occasions. As well as honouring King Rama V, the excursion promoted rail tourism. The next steam excursion is scheduled for 5 December 2026, on the Bangkok–Chachoengsao–Bangkok route. He mentioned that he’d seen I had booked a ticket for the new Beyond Horizon luxury carriage. He told me that today was the first time this Thai-made carriage would be used in commercial service, making it an exciting day for SRT. I told him I was excited too, as I’ve been looking forward to experiencing it for myself.
