1) Defamation per se simply removes the legal requirement to prove damages, which isn't even a particularly difficult element to meet for defamation of a public figure. The challenge is proving the defendant knowingly lied with an intent for said lie to cause harm to the plaintiff ("actual malice"). 2) Even if Hasan had defamed 500 people or whatever it is Saltman is claiming here, it is entirely immaterial to whether or not Hasan has been defamed by Scott Jennings. Stealing from a thief or murdering a murderer are not any less unlawful. 3) In 2020, Pete Hegseth paid off a hotel employee who accused him of drugging and raping her.
