Alex Caruso says it has become “cool to not watch basketball,” arguing that highlight culture and viral storylines are overshadowing the actual game
Caruso believes basketball coverage has shifted away from breaking down great plays and showing fans the best moments from games toward chasing whatever generates the most clicks and attention. He says he misses the old SportsCenter format, where viewers could catch several minutes of highlights from different games before the Top 10 plays. Caruso argues that the focus on entertainment, clip farming and eye grabbing storylines is drawing attention away from the quality of basketball itself.
Spoken like a real Head Coach. I love the direction the league is going. I hope the pro-tankers have come around on this.
Splitter: “I think we gotta understand, the NBA is gonna change now with the rules. Nobody is just playing guys, giving them minutes, and we’re gonna lose, we don’t care. You gotta win every game. That’s how you should be approaching. That’s gonna change how you develop players, because the importance of winning is greater.”

Quick notes on Bulls-Bucks, a fun No-Defense-Required Game where you knew you were watching two bad teams, but had a good time anyway.

Domantas Sabonis says Kings are best when he reads the defense as an offensive hub.
Domantas Sabonis: “Move the ball. Get me the ball more so I can swing it and get guys open. You know, we took a lot of one-pass shots, pick-and-roll shots without passing the ball, you know, those numbers are really high and I feel like we're best when we kind of mix it up - point guard shoots, point guard hits the corner, point guard hits me, then I can make the read - that's where I'm best at.”

I mean, just an all-time TV segment. Making Chuck do Who He Play For multiple times in a row with the same players is a brilliant idea and I was legit crying laughing by the end, my god.
more notes:
- Caleb & Miller gotta work on their handle relentlessly
- Matas, Caleb, Miller need to put their bodies into someone on the def glass. Can't rely on their athleticism to rebound
- When Norm, Josh & Tre got into the paint, it opened up cutting opps for teammates
- I love Toronto's defense. Dogs all over the perimeter. They're going to be a nightmare to play for teams like Philly & NYK
- Kinda hope Hawkins replaces Hield in the rotation
- Jalen, Okoro & Tre are gonna have some suitors around the league
The transition defense of the Bulls young players was pretty brutal. It's one of the most difficult things to learn coming from college. As soon as possession changes, even if not involved in play, Caleb, Matas, & Miller have to spring back. If they don't, it leads to mismatches
In the 1st qtr, offensively, I actually liked what I saw from Okoro, Jalen & Josh. Loved Okoro’s aggressiveness, attacked rim, looked for his shot. Giddey set up Smith 4 times for layups/dunks. Would’ve had more success if people hit their 3s.
Defensively, on the other hand…

Absolutely beautiful tribute from @adamamin and @CHSN_Bulls for Stacey King.
Great stuff here. A ton of pressure on Kessler this season. He’ll have plenty of opportunities to playmake out of the pocket in the short roll.
There’s a lot I’ll be looking for tonight from this new Lakers roster but the main thing is how quickly Walker Kessler can read and react when teams blitz Luka. We’re going to see that all season, especially in the playoffs and down the stretch of close games. Luka’s passing makes him great against that blitz coverage but teams would still rather force someone else to make a play than let him dictate the offense.
The difference will be whether or not Kessler can make the right decision in those few seconds when we have a 4-on-3 advantage, whether that’s finishing himself or finding the open man when help comes. Last year, teams had to think twice because LeBron was usually the roller and you were giving one of the greatest passers ever that advantage. That’s not the case anymore. Kessler has to prove he can consistently make the right play before the defense recovers or teams are going to keep blitzing Luka.
It's game 1 so I won't overreact but I just want Kessler to show that he has the ABILITY to make those reads more times than not.
Couple notes from OKC v SAS:
- Fox is probably still the Spurs best guard
- Love Castle taking & making 3s, while also protecting the ball, will be a major factor in determining how far the Spurs go.
- SGA is unreal
What I’d like to see:
- Josh 80% on 6FTA per 36
- Caleb 9rbs per 36
- Matas 8rbs per 36
- Matas 80% on 4FTA per 36
- Caleb: FTA > 3PA
- Jalen, Isaac & Tre 65+ gms played
- No one more than 30mpg
- Miller more time at C
- PWill 6rbs & 5FTA per 36
- Norm avg 8 3PA per 36
Well done, Philip! Gotta educate some of these people out there.
I'm stunned, frankly. Never thought a Twitter post of mine would lead to an article. But I'm happy for it!
