ALT 🔹An open-source cross-platform mobile automation tool, commonly used for testing. It’s not a test framework. ‣ It’s merely an automation library that lets you control mobile devices and much more.

ALT 🔹Wraps vendor-provided automation frameworks in a Selenium WebDriver API (Android UiAutomator2, XCUITest, etc.). ‣ The Appium team doesn’t do a lot of low-level automation hackery. They do some, but in general they prefer to wrap automation technology, which has been provided by the makers of the mobile OS’s themselves. ‣ For example, Google has the UiAutomator2 technology, Espresso is the more recent tech. Apple provides the XCTest libraries that allow for UI automation. ‣ Part of the goal is to wrap those technologies up in a way that is accessible from the Selenium WebDriver API. Appium can do this for a lot of reasons, but the WebDriver API is a great way to talk to automation technologies in a variety of languages and using a variety of different tool sets.

ALT 🔹Allows authoring of test scripts in any programming language, using any test framework, hooking into any CI system, etc.

ALT 🔹Consists of a massive community of practitioners who maintain an ever-expanding knowledge base for different platforms. ‣ The Appium community often does mobile automation for a living. Within the community there is an ever-expanding set of practices and tricks for automating different platforms.
