I'm not often saddened by a business closing, but this one stings a bit. Charlie’s has been the source of many enjoyable memories for me.

In my work I deal with death of all kinds: natural, homicide, accident, and suicide. The last couple of weeks have involved too many of the latter two. These poor families.

Last night, after we had put him to bed, our boy started yelling from his bedroom. “Nope. Halldeen buhts bye. Eep aht. Eap aht halldeen buhts peas.” Translation: Nope. Halloween books bye. Keep out. Keep out Halloween books please! He would not go to sleep until I promised I would not put away the Halloween books. He is not ready to transition solely to Thanksgiving books. He wants them all!

I might log off X for the next week. Not sure I can handle all the BYU-Utah Holy War nonsense. Maybe two weeks…

I’ve been on call almost every Halloween since 2018. I have yet to be called to pick up a kid that was hit by a car. I’m praying it doesn’t happen tonight. Drivers, please slow way down in neighborhoods and stay off your phones—kids are out and not always looking. Parents, keep a close eye on the younger ones. Let’s keep it that way.

Utah Amendment B debates are overwhelming my timeline and I’m getting sick of it. So I am going to try to help out while trying to be completely nonpartisan on this. UTAH AMENDMENT B: THE PROS AND CONS There are legitimate arguments on both sides. WHAT IT DOES: Amendment B would require a 60% supermajority instead of a simple majority for citizen-led ballot initiatives that increase taxes or prevent certain property tax reductions. In other words, getting 50% + 1 of the vote would no longer be enough for these particular initiatives to pass. WHY SOME PEOPLE SUPPORT IT: • It provides an additional safeguard against tax increases being approved by a narrow majority. • It requires broader public support before citizens can vote to impose additional taxes. • It could make it more difficult for outside organizations and special interests to push tax increases through with relatively slim voter support. • Supporters argue that tax increases should require a stronger consensus because they affect everyone. WHY SOME PEOPLE OPPOSE IT: • It creates two different standards: citizens would need 60% approval for certain tax increases, while the Legislature could still approve tax increases with a simple majority. • It makes citizen-led ballot initiatives more difficult to pass, even when a majority of Utah voters support them. • It potentially weakens one of the most important tools voters have to hold their elected officials accountable. • It could prevent initiatives supported by a clear majority from becoming law simply because they don’t reach that 60% threshold. HERE’S AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF HISTORY: Utah voters approved Medicaid expansion through Proposition 3 in 2018 with approximately 53.3% support. The medical marijuana initiative also passed that year with approximately 52.7%. Under a 60% requirement, neither would have passed. That doesn’t automatically mean Amendment B is good or bad, but it does demonstrate how significantly the threshold could change the outcome of future ballot initiatives. SO WHAT’S THE REAL DEBATE? This isn’t simply a question of whether you support lower taxes. It’s a question of whether protecting taxpayers from narrowly approved tax increases justifies placing a higher voting threshold on citizens than the one required of their elected representatives. There are reasonable arguments on both sides. Personally, I think people should understand the constitutional implications before voting based solely on a campaign slogan or party affiliation. Read the amendment. Understand what it changes. Then decide whether the additional protection is worth the potential loss of direct voter influence. An informed vote is always better than a reactionary one.

Living the gospel of Jesus Christ brings blessings.
“Growing up, it was always God, family, and baseball. There were a lot of late nights practicing, a lot of traveling, and sometimes it was hard to get to church. But my parents helped me build a foundation on a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. “I always had a testimony, but I hadn’t read the Book of Mormon all the way through. I believed what my parents told me. They’re really smart, and their testimonies are strong. Then I got drafted, and I thought, ‘All right, I probably need to read this for myself.’ “One of the guys I was drafted with shared my faith. We became roommates and studied the scriptures together. As I read, I received personal revelation. That’s when my testimony really became stronger. I could see Heavenly Father’s hand in putting someone like that in my life. “Reading helped me strengthen my testimony, and living what I believed gave me more opportunities to recognize His hand. “My mom had talked to me about tithing before I even had a job. She told me about the blessings she’d seen and encouraged me to pay it. So I did. As I’ve kept that commitment, I’ve learned that the blessings can be physical, too. For me, being able to play baseball at my best is a blessing I connect directly to paying my tithing. “Playing at an elite level still has its ups and downs. After a good year, I had a rough year. Sometimes you’re asking Heavenly Father, ‘Please help me,’ and you forget how much He’s already helped. Looking back helped me recognize the opportunities and blessings He had already given me. “That same commitment to living my faith carries into how I take care of myself. Living the Word of Wisdom is a choice I made early. I’ve never wanted to drink or smoke. In high school, I watched people try vaping, get addicted, and struggle to stop. I didn’t want to find myself in that situation, and I’m grateful I made that decision before I ever started playing professionally. “So when we were celebrating with the team and there wasn’t any sparkling cider, I opened the fridge, saw some Fanta in glass bottles, and grabbed a couple. I didn’t even want to hold alcohol because I didn’t want to give the impression I was drinking it. Then everybody started sending me pictures of their Fanta. “Reading the Book of Mormon, paying my tithing, and living the Word of Wisdom are commitments I carry with me. As I’ve lived them, the foundation my parents helped me build in the gospel of Jesus Christ has become stronger through my own experiences. “Heavenly Father has really shown His hand in my life.” —Cooper

Thank you PETA for giving me another reason to love eggnog.
Hot take that really shouldn’t be a hot take: eggnog is absolutely disgusting.   It’s made of raw eggs, milk, and loaded with saturated fat. Gross.

I learned today that my coworker is not a Harry Potter fan. I showed him my Halloween costume but he didn’t know what it was. He did make some entertaining guesses though... Ghost of Christmas Present Pigeon lady from Home Alone Fat Guy from Lost

Just cast my vote, and I’m grateful for the chance to do it. Every citizen has both the privilege and the responsibility to study the issues and show up in every election. From our local municipalities to the national level, this is how we influence the direction our communities and our country take. Informed participation is how we do our part. Those who sit it out quietly give up their strongest claim to shape what happens next. I’m glad I showed up.

I've only fished a couple of times and don't own any equipment. A couple of days ago, my 12-year-old told our neighbor/friend (who fishes a lot) that he wanted to try it. Our friend took us to a nearby reservoir this evening. My little man caught one on his first cast! He loved it. We may have found a new hobby.

If you see me today, no, I do not have smallpox. The dermatologist just froze a bunch of spots off my face and neck. I’ll be temporarily uglier than usual.
