There's this 1988 book, "The Lexicon of Intentionally Ambiguous Recommendations", full of lines like - I can't recommend him highly enough - I most enthusiastically recommend this man with no qualifications whatsoever - You'll be lucky to get him to work for you - No person would be better for the job and - I am pleased to say that this candidate is a former colleague of mine
Amazing. I'm going to have to steal this line for use in code reviews.

Funny that my 2013 English lit dissertation was near/at the peak
The number of people writing dissertations in the humanities has collapses, now the same thing is happening in the social sciences. I'd wager that we will see a similar trend in psychology and other fields before long. Cuts in funding, the tight academic job market, and AI are rapidly changing the university and cratering graduate programs.

Got to see You Can See Everything. I’m not sure I *enjoyed* it, but it was interesting. The most memorable moment was when the husband Billy said he had been a fan of Charlie Kirk and a woman behind me loudly gasped in horror.

Also, am I the only one dismayed that Holmes et al gave up their percentage in the documentary?

Best horror films on this top ten of this list are Alien or The Thing. Perhaps surprisingly, given that it’s often quite funny, I think Evil Dead 2 is the film that most viscerally *scared* me most. The best horror film all time for me is Woman in the Dunes, 1964.

Curious to hear from the surprising number of folks who think that smartphones are bad but AI is gonna be good. I think I can see the argument but it is unexpected to me.
A thread with four polls. Overall, the Internet has been

Joel and Ethan Coen confirm they will be reuniting on a new film “soon” "We're getting old. It better be the near future” Their last film was “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” released over eight years ago. tinyurl.com/249c5bjt

A lot of philosophy-infused AI discourse is ridiculous because it boils down to this: "Look at this dumb layperson who believes [contentious view held by some philosophers of mind]. As an expert, I can tell you [contentious view held by some philosophers of mind]."

I’m 49, I have a PhD, I’ve taught university courses for 23+ years now, yet I woke up last night to a dream that I had missed half a semester of an English course in high school, so I was going to have to go back to retake it. The relief I felt when I woke up was enormous.

I’m working on (further) revamping my composition courses for the age of AI and I keep thinking of these two images.
