Even if a man goes on to a white-collar career, I think it is beneficial for him to have experience building things with his hands and caring for living things, whether that means growing vegetables or other plants as a farmer, or looking after animals as a stockman or herder. The same applies to hunting, fishing, and basic outdoor survival skills. There are certain skills that, even if you never need to use them again, teach you something important about the reality of the world. They keep you grounded. They prevent you from becoming so comfortable in your white-collar existence that you forget you are only able to do your job because millions of other men are doing blue-collar work.
