1/ In 2019 we made this video internally at ZUtA Labs. I've never shared it publicly. This week's reporting on OpenAI's first device made me dig it up.
Watch it, read @markgurman's description of what's shipping - and let me tell you exactly what Sam Altman told me about this.
NEW: OpenAI’s device - a human-like smart speaker -
will look like a doughnut and be the size of a hockey puck. It meant to be held. It has a camera, speakers, microphones, lights and, most notably, moving parts to show interactivity. It’ll be $300-400. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Welcome to the red-green alliance.
This was Israel's voter turnout in the top Arab towns, in the elections last week.
There's nothing "normal" about it, and Israel's Shin-Bet is investigating it.
The US have their own voting system - but all systems can be played with.
Hmmm… Very Interesting…

To be good Americans, we must be better Jews, and to be better Jews, we must become Zionists״.
Published this a few months ago just before July 4th.
Seems even more relevant this morning, as the US is waking to midterms results - America at 250 is living through Rome’s Third-Century Crisis.
Rome showed the way back - the US can too

Wow.
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from Apple executives over the years - “we have no plans to open up Siri”
Big news for our developers! We are shipping a developer preview that dramatically expands the capabilities of all apps to integrate into Siri. So excited to see what you folks do with this.

Elon Musk's fasts growing product is Grok Bot, he's "never seen anything grow as fast".
But he just put the breaks on it. And it's ok.
Two weeks ago, @elonmusk posted that he had "never seen anything grow as fast as Grok Bot" and he seemed to be incredibly happy about it, adding "which means people are deriving real value in excess of what they pay". But a few hours ago a user posted about his Grok Bot usage being at 100% with 4 days till reset - something that has never happened to him - to which Musk replied the post below: "The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue".
It's easy to read this and think that AI agents don’t work and that the hype is over. But honestly, I was actually waiting to see that. For me it was obvious it was coming. Not because agents aren't useful, but because we’re early. Very early.
An agent isn’t a chatbot. It browses, calls tools, opens tasks, closes them, reroutes them, runs sub-tasks and re-reads everything it has done, again and again. For what might seem like a simple task for a user - "find me the best XXX, for my YYY", could actually result in costing hundreds of millions of tokens. Which means, because people are using it more than expected - it's incredibly expensive to serve. In other words, it's not a demand problem. It's a cost problem. And cost problems have a way of solving themselves.
We’ve seen this movie before, with mobile internet, on demand apps and more.
In the early 2000s, going online from your phone cost a fortune. You paid per kilobyte, and even a text message cost money. I remember this well. My first startup was a system built on sending text messages, SMSs. They were costly, but mobile internet, “WAP,” cost even more. Nobody browsed the web on their phone unless they had to check something.
Then slowly, and then very quickly, prices came down. From paying per megabyte, we moved to monthly packages, and soon carriers started offering unlimited usage. Around the same time, the iPhone and the App Store introduced the concept of "apps". And the apps that were built early, when almost nobody could afford to use them, were the ones in place to reap what they had sown once prices dropped.
Take WhatsApp. It launched in 2009, when BlackBerry and BBM were still the hype, and offered a BBM-like experience outside the BlackBerry. I clearly remember thinking, "Why would I message someone over the internet, if an SMS is cheaper?" Until it wasn’t. A few years later, WhatsApp had made the paid SMS almost irrelevant.
AI is on the same curve, only faster. Over the past few weeks alone, model prices dropped again and again, and open models are now released for free. Today’s "unsustainable" agent will be tomorrow’s unlimited plan.
The companies building agents now, while it’s expensive and messy, are laying the groundwork, the same way the early mobile apps did.
I’ve learned two things over the years: never bet against Elon, and always bet that the cost of a commodity in high demand will go down.
Apple’s earnings call is tomorrow. Apple is extremely behind in AI, and its new CEO, John Ternus, just hinted at its AI agent strategy.
In the interview below with @WIRED @StevenLevy on Firday, Ternus was asked the obvious question about Apple's eco-system - whether AI agents could make apps unnecessary. Ternus answered a short, and kind of criptic answer - "That could make life really easy, I suppose, but the creation of products is a deeply human and personal thing, something that we love to do".
Ternus acknowledges that agents "could make life really easy". Then he seems to explain why Apple will keep backing apps and the app ecosystem: because people love making them.
Yes, Levi asked him about a solution users use, and Ternus answered about a solution they like to create.
Do you see the disconnect?
Ternus is looking at the wrong side of the table.
The question with agents isn’t how companies like to create products. It’s how people consume them, how people get the tasks they want done. And people will always choose the easy way. It's nice that Apple or people like to build things - but we know very well - just because you build it, doesn't mean users will use it...
Obviously, Ternus has his reasons to answer the way he did. Apple is incredibly dependent on the app eco-system. If agents do the tasks for users, people stop using apps. Apps are the heart of Apple’s business. The App Store takes up to 30% of every purchase, and Apple’s services business brought in about $31 billion in the last quarter alone.
Since 2009, "there’s an app for that" has also been the iPhone’s biggest moat. The phone’s value as a device comes almost entirely from the apps it can run, and with them, the tasks it can do for you.
However, with AI, if an agent does everything for you, the home screen matters a lot less, and so does which apps you have - and therefore the phone you carry.
Funnily enough, just a few days ago I wrote about Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy told investors not to worry about outside AI shopping agents, because "few customers are doing much shopping this way yet".
Two of the biggest companies in the world, in the same week, defending their "storefronts" and moats, from the same thing - agents that walk right past them.
To be fair, Apple can place a different bet here. Its has somewhat of a plan for Siri to work through apps, not instead of them - so apps become the agent’s hands and Apple stays the gatekeeper. That could work if Apple build it and gear it the right way. But Apple seems late to AI, and it already has Google’s Gemini powering Siri.
So if I were a shareholder or a board member of Apple, tomorrow on John Ternus' first earnings call, I'd ask him exactly what he meant - do you really think users will choose apps over AI agents because you like building apps...?
I got to spend some time with John Ternus and other Apple execs this week for the MB Pro launch. Here are some early thoughts on Apple's new CEO--and his responses to my questions. wired.com/story/i-spent-30-m…
Yesterday, on Amazon’s earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy went out of his way to tell investors not to worry about AI agents. But he said one bad word.
He said - without no one asking - "the answer is no" to whether they’re hurting Amazon’s ads business, and that "few customers are doing much shopping this way yet".
Hearing that sentence, with that one word - it sounded VERY familiar. And Jassy should know this.
Back when the internet started and Jeff Bezos decided to quit his VP Wall Street job to build a business around "the Internet", Barnes & Noble was the biggest bookseller in the world, with about $2 billion in sales. Brad Stone in his book about Amazon "The Everything Store", tells the story of how in 1996 when Amazon was still a tiny Seattle startup selling only books with about $16 million in sales, the Riggio brothers who ran Barnes & Noble, took Bezos out to dinner. According to "The Everything Store", they told him they were about to launch their own website and "crush Amazon". They weren't worried about Bezos, because people weren't really buying books "on the internet". Yet. The next year, a leading tech analyst predicted that once Barnes & Noble will go online and start selling books on the internet, Amazon would become "Amazon.toast".
The bookstores had the scale, the brands, the stores, the customers. And on paper they were right - very few people were buying books online. Yet.
We all know the end of this story - where Amazon is, and where Barnes & Noble ended.
Amazon became Amazon - because the behemoth that led the industry looked at the numbers and said "it’s not happening yet", while Amazon bet everything on "it's not happening yet, but it will - and when it does - it'll happen ONLY like this".
Today, Amazon is the bookstore. And hearing that from Amazon's CEO yesterday - I couldn't ignore seeing the same pattern.
And like Barnes & Noble didn't operate in a vacuum and the market didn't wait for them, same thing with Amazon today. Just hours before that call, a user posted the post below how Amazon locked out his Grok Bot, and as you can see, @elonmusk reposted that post saying his @Bot is already buying somewhere else. @finkd also said something similar about @Muse a few weeks ago - Amazon blocked it, so Muse started getting things on Instacart for him, for a much cheaper price.
Just like with the internet, we know our lives are about to change with AI and agents.
It's clear as daylight for anyone who has dipped their toes into it.
Jassy's "yet" may very well turn out to be the bookstore's "yet".
Is Amazon about to make the exact mistake it built its empire on?
That’s what I do too. Just have @Bot buy it somewhere else at a lower price.
Show me one other military in the world that does this.
Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency has been giving Hamas members a harsh choice: separate from your families and die alone or remain with them and risk the lives of their relatives.
This is what happened to Muhammad al-Bayouk, a Khan Yunis Hamas member who was killed several days ago by the IDF. Al-Bayouk received a phone call from a Shin Bet officer, who gave him the ultimatum. Al-Bayouk climbed onto a roof and he was struck by a missile. This is what the Saudi-owned pan-Srab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported.
Five similar incident have happened in recent months.
Apple’s new MacBook Pro with a touchscreen is an incredibly innovative product, for 2012. But Apple might have hit on something I don’t think it sees itself.
A laptop with a touchscreen has been around for well over a decade. A decade ago, when everyone was doing them, Apple decided to do something else - and in 2016 gave us the "Touch Bar" instead. That thin strip of touch above the keyboard / next to the screen - as if to say a full touchscreen on a Mac would never happen. And yea, it has already discontinued that "Touch Bar" since. With that in mind, I’m honestly not sure anyone will buy a $2,899 MacBook now "because it also has a touchscreen".
But here’s the twist, and what I’m actually looking at.
As I’ve written many times, in a world of AI we’re moving to a UI with less typing and less dragging a mouse around. You tell the AI what you want, and it does it or gives you options. You tap one, approve, tap again. Typing and clicking turn into simple tapping.
So a work device you can also tap on? You let your AI run, sit back, and only tap here and there every once in a while? That actually sounds like a device I’d use today...
Funnily enough, I don’t think Apple intended this, but it might be onto something.
At the event yesterday, Apple’s examples were rotating 3D objects and playing virtual instruments, the kind of things you’d do on a tablet. But it may have just landed, by mistake, in exactly the right place.
It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened with AI. When a revolutionary technology suddenly changes everything and nobody predicted it, you look around your toolbox and say, "Hey, this tool I had no use for until now is actually perfect for this!" and your cheap piece of wood becomes gold.
That’s what happened to Nvidia. It started off building chips for gamers, to render explosions and car chases. I remember that well. Back in 2013 at Umoove, we were also developing our tech for games, and we were introduced to a team at Nvidia to explore partnerships. Then researchers discovered that the same chips Nvidia built for gamers were perfect for training AI, and boom. Nvidia became “Nvidia.” It didn’t plan the AI revolution. It stumbled into it and became the most valuable company in the world.
Back to this new MacBook. It’s been in the works and rumored for years, and it looks like a great product, if the year were 2012. But we’re going through a generational change in how we use computers.
Maybe Apple will hit gold here too, and lead the way in how people use their work computers in the AI era - less typing and mouse moving, more tapping and waiting.
Does Apple and @johnternus have it in them to realize they may have just hit the nail on the head, and to turn an old feature into the first real interface of the AI era?
Or will this stay just a “touchscreen MacBook”...?
This is exactly the same playbook that is being played in the US to take control of the Democratic Party.
Hopefully Israel will share all the evidence and names - and will help the US stop the Muslim takeover there too.
Breaking: Central Elections Committee Chairman Solberg has instructed Zini to investigate dramatic information concerning foreign funding of a campaign intended to influence the elections in Israel.
As I understand it, this refers to large sums of money allegedly funneled from Arab sources to increase voter turnout in the Arab community through illegal means.
Amazon launched five new devices today and the interesting thing isn't a device - but a small tiny piece of hardware added to a device we already know.
Today Amazon unveiled several devices, in an Amazon like style.
A new Echo Dot that doubles as a smart home hub. An Echo Time, which is a bedside clock that senses your sleep. The Alexa Photo Frame, where AI picks your best photos. A thinner Echo Show with a better camera.
And an interesting "new" device called "Echo Studio" which is a smart speaker, but now also has a camera.
A camera on a speaker.
We're used to having cameras on devices - but when we find them on a device, we most usually find a "screen" on the other side. Whether it's a front facing camera on a tablet/phone, or whether it's a camera in a Ring device for seeing who's on the other side of the door - the camera is one side, and we get with it "the other side" too to see what the camera sees. The camera is there for us to see.
However, this is a speaker. This speaker has no screen. Not on it, and not necessarily connected to a device you own with a screen. Meaning, to spell it out, this camera isn’t there so we can look at someone, or even ourselves.
It’s there so the device can look at us. Look at you.
And Amazon isn’t hiding it.
This smart speaker has a camera that recognizes faces, counts who’s in the room, lets Alexa see what you’re holding, oh, and it can also connect to a Fire TV for a video call (at some point in the future, as a side note - not the main use case).
This camera is meant for recognizing and tracking. Show it a board game and it explains the rules. Show it a cereal box and it reorders it.
Connecting this to what I've been writing about - this is the next step in how we talk to computers and creating the new OS and UI for the AI era.
First we typed commands. Then we clicked icons, then we touched glass, then we talked. Each step removed a layer between us and the machine.
Now the machine is learning to see. An AI OS doesn’t wait for you to open an app or even say a word. It sees the room, understands what's going on and acts. Screens were built for us to look at machines.
Cameras are how machines look at us.
What makes this an even bigger move, is that it's coming from Amazon. The company that owns Ring, the device that's main job is "to see", but also the company that in 2014 created the smart speaker category with the Echo. Everyone called it creepy to put a microphone that’s always listening in your home - to have an "always on" mic. Now, we're taking a step forward towards having a camera "always on" that sits in millions of kitchens.
Amazon taught us to accept a device that hears us. Now it’s believes we’ll accept one that sees us. Will we? Twelve years ago we said no to the microphone, and then we said yes - and after Amazon, everyone followed.
Will AI and its new UI bring us to a place where we accept an always-on camera in our living room...?
The new era of Echo starts now. ⬇️

Israel’s elections are tomorrow, and we all get to vote.
Actually, we don’t just “get” to vote. We “have” to. This is my elections post.
By the amount of political talk and commentary, you’d think we have elections all the time. But this is actually the first time in 38 years that a government has served out its full term. After four years, Israel is going to the polls, and once again the whole world is watching a country you can barely find on the map.
People always like to compare Israel’s size to “the size of New Jersey.” It’s a classic talking point, meant to show how a small country of about 10 million people can punch far above its weight and grab a seat at the main table.
But I think that misses the point.
The world doesn’t watch Israel because we’re small and impressive. It watches for a deeper reason, one that’s hard to put into words. With the elections here, I keep coming back to these powerful words Dr. @jordanbpeterson spoke in a talk here in Jerusalem a few years ago:
“...as Jews in Israel, are you telling the greatest story ever told? Well, you decide that by how you live. And that decision will affect the world, because everyone looks here for one reason or another - it’s not so easy to understand. Everyone looks here to see, well, how are you actually doing under this tremendous assault of adversarial criticism, as this little, tiny people in the middle of no man’s land in some real sense, as a - what would you say - cardinal model of the nation-state and the city on the hill. You have a tremendous moral responsibility, like you have, perhaps, for your entire history, for reasons that are very difficult to understand, and I think it is true, in some real sense, that the fate of the world depends on the decisions of the people of Israel…”
I grew up as a grandson of Holocaust survivors who survived with nothing but the pajamas on their bodies. I grew up in Israel in the ’80s and ’90s and lost too many friends to terror attacks. I grew up in the footsteps of Rashi, the Rambam and Rav Kook. I study Torah and Jewish history every single day and this passage echoes for me almost every day.
Now, on the eve of the elections, its final line rings even stronger: “the fate of the world depends on the decisions of the people of Israel…”
Whatever ballot you put in the box, it’s a privilege most people in history never had - to be part of this nation, to have a voice in its decisions, and to help write the next chapter of a story the whole world is watching.
They’re not watching because we punch above our weight. We punch above our weight because we know our purpose and what we live for, and that’s why they’re watching.
I’m proud to be part of this nation. And tomorrow, I’m proud to vote.

Bill, with much respect to you, and I’d love to explain this offline - but this talking point of “Smotrich and Ben Gvir”, is the same kind of talking point as “very fine people” by Trump that the media pushed.
You woke up post 10/7. You’ll wake up to this too at some point.
I said I wasn’t going to weigh in on who should be prime minister of Israel as that is a decision for Israeli citizens. I did, however, want to share one point of view from the perspective of someone who has an understanding of how Israel is perceived in America.
Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have caused Israel enormous reputational damage with their statements and actions which are presented in the global media as representing the voice and will of all Israelis.
As such, a government formed without Ben-Gvir and Smotrich will send a message to the rest of the world that Israel is turning a new page.
This will allow Israel to rebuild lost credibility, increase the opportunity for an expansion of the Abraham Accords, and enjoy a better relationship with Democrats and Republicans and Americans at large.
