Pan-New York- “The explosion from the torpedo blew gasoline over the ship aft of the tank. Flames and fumes were sucked down into the engine room and crew's quarters, causing many to be overcome with smoke and fumes. Flames upon the water and rough seas prevented the rafts and the only remaining lifeboat from being launched. Survivors gathered aft to await rescue.”

Friends, this is a seafaring song about a merchant vessel, Cannery Row, Monterey, and decisions with consequences. The Wind and the Waves, by @mamilton youtu.be/C5LKaadZHAI?si=b1mF…

No one knew this better than WWII Merchant Marine veterans like my late father. We had to get aged mariners out of mothballs for the Gulf War as well as ships. One of his friends, long retired disappeared for months and it turned out he had gone back to the Persian Gulf.

Some of those merchant ships were such bad rust buckets that just firing the main gun would break things near gun mount. Dad told me a few stories but I'm sure it had to effect their thinking every time they saw a tin can or flat top sail by. He was a Signalman and proud of it.
I never heard that before. They are forgotten by the country and I never understood that. There is a great website started by a WWII Navy Armed Guard. That's certainly a different way of framing the situation. My dad was in the "Armed Guard", an almost forgotten branch of the @USNavy and he was blown out of the water twice in WWII while on merchant ships. The rest of the Navy just sneered at the Armed Guard as not real Navy.
Original SS Cody Victory transferred to Peru and renamed Yavari. Photo made in Panama Canal in September 1948. Caught fire at Los Angeles in 1968 and sold to shipbreakers in 1969 but sank in March 1969 - Provided by Chuck Durand. #VictoryShip
