The Tennessee bishop recently accused of being hostile to Catholic tradition has just made a rather important statement in its defence. The background makes this considerably more interesting than it first appears.
Bishop Mark Beckman of Knoxville, has attracted considerable criticism from traditional Catholics. Last year, he severely restricted the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass in his diocese. More recently, he caused an extraordinary backlash by asking priests to discontinue the customary communal recitation of prayers, including the much-loved Prayer to St Michael, immediately before and after Mass. I confess that I initially found the latter decision particularly difficult to understand. Why discourage such a beautiful and powerful prayer, especially at a time when the Church surely needs St Michael's intercession more than ever?
But when I commented on the controversy, Deacon David Oatney @oatney76 of Knoxville provided some useful local context. The custom had been mandated by Beckman's predecessor, Bishop Richard Stika, ostensibly as a response to the clerical sexual abuse crisis. Stika subsequently resigned in 2023, aged just 65, following an apostolic visitation and serious allegations concerning his handling of abuse cases and diocesan administration. Deacon Oatney explained that, for some within the diocese, the prayer had acquired a painful association with that troubled period. He personally loves the St Michael Prayer, but suggested that Beckman's decision might be understood partly as an attempt to move beyond aspects of his predecessor's legacy. That does not establish the bishop's motivation, and I remain unconvinced that discontinuing a perfectly orthodox and beloved devotion is necessarily the best pastoral response. But it demonstrates why local knowledge matters, and why we should be cautious about interpreting every episcopal decision through the prism of the liturgy wars.
The diocese has also clarified that Beckman has not prohibited the faithful from praying to St Michael. His concern is with routinely attaching additional communal prayers to the celebration of Mass.
Now comes another interesting development.
On 2 November, following controversy surrounding an unauthorised ministry associated with the Society of St Pius X, the Diocese of Knoxville published an instruction addressing ecclesiastical communion, tradition and obedience. Among its statements is this particularly important sentence:
"Attachment to the Traditional Latin Mass does not itself constitute schism."
Coming from a bishop whom some traditional Catholics have come to regard as an opponent of their liturgical inheritance, that is worth noticing. Beckman goes on to explain that Catholics may legitimately express concerns about episcopal decisions and seek their reconsideration, but that liturgical preference cannot justify establishing a parallel ministry in defiance of lawful ecclesiastical authority. I think he is right about that because the traditional liturgy is a treasure of the Church, and Catholics should be free to advocate for its preservation and wider availability. I also believe that some of the restrictions imposed upon faithful traditional communities have been pastorally disastrous, creating alienation where there ought to have been understanding and generosity. But fidelity to Catholic tradition necessarily includes fidelity to the visible communion of the Church. We cannot defend the inheritance handed down to us while treating the authority of the bishops in communion with Peter as something optional.
There is, of course, a corresponding responsibility upon bishops. If attachment to the older liturgy is not inherently schismatic, then those who cherish it should not be treated as though they are perpetually suspected of disloyalty. This is what makes Beckman's statement particularly useful. Whatever one's judgement about his liturgical decisions, he has explicitly rejected the suggestion that traditional liturgical attachment is itself evidence of schism. It is possible to disagree with a bishop's pastoral judgement without rejecting his authority. It is equally possible to insist upon ecclesiastical obedience while recognising that bishops sometimes make decisions that are unnecessarily restrictive or pastorally unwise.
The recent ordinations of four traditional priests in Fréjus-Toulon offer one encouraging example of how these tensions might be resolved constructively. Knoxville presents a more difficult situation, but the underlying principle is the same. Catholic tradition does not exist in opposition to Catholic communion. Both belong to the same Church, and both deserve to be defended. Perhaps the way forward begins when bishops stop regarding traditional Catholics as a problem, and traditional Catholics stop assuming that every bishop who disappoints them must be an enemy.
Where in the Bible does it say we must use the government as the only tool to take care of people?

To clear up a misunderstanding, the Catholic Church has never claimed to have a monopoly on Truth. The Church claims that she has the *fullness* of truth, but 1) that’s not a monopoly, and 2) the Church is still learning - because God is infinite and it is impossible to exhaust the infinite.
The Church has always understood that something true is true *regardless* of who says it. Hence, the Church recognizes truths in Aristotle and even adopts such Aristotelian language in doctrines like Transubstantiation. Even our most celebrated Theologians (especially Aquinas) have had no problem quoting and learning from Jews (like Maimonides), Muslims (like Averroes), and pagans (like Plato, Aristotle, Seneca, Cicero, etc.)
Truth doesn’t contradict truth. The Catholic intellectual tradition is about trying to get a better understanding of how all truths are integrated together. To be fair, that doesn’t mean that we think all religions are *equally* true, because we are convinced that the Trinity Itself is the ground and foundation for all reality. But, when we are at our best, we are willing to tip our hats whenever someone else speaks the truth.

And here we have yet another example of how Sola Scriptura leads people straight into regurgitating ancient heresies.
This time, it's the heresy of Partialism.
Nearly 2,000 years of Christian theology, and thanks to the Protestant Reformation, we're still watching Protestants reinvent the very errors the Church condemned long ago.
🔴 You can’t make this up.

I don’t have to “imagine” Owen. I remember when the regime in Iran sprayed schools around the country with poison gas during “Woman, Life, Freedom” and killed over 1,000 school girls.
The media, including yourself, said absolutely nothing.
Hope that answers your question.

Every time a sad boy poaches a trophy from girls' sports, a sad girl should be allowed to poach from the boys - taking away their accomplishments, scholarships and records.
But we all know that could never happen bc it's only girls who are expected to absorb unfairness.

Because I say: ‘If one trans child dies to protect someone's damn trophy, then this bill is grotesque.’”

In 2010 a team of Israeli specialist eye surgeons were invited to the Maldives by the government to perform cataract surgery that enabled some people to see again and to train medical practitioners in the archipelago nation.
All the treatments were free and so was the training to raise skills in the medical community.
Immediately, local Islamists began a campaign claiming the Jews were in the Maldives to steal people's eyes.
There hasn't been such a team since.

“because he put rocks in a girl’s mouth”
And what else did they do to her, Brian? Oh.
They gang-r4ped a CHILD.
What is wrong with you? They did this at 12, what do you think they’ll do as men with adult strength? You don’t “accidentally” gang r4pe a child. This isn’t a “turning point” or “learning experience.”
FL has capital punishment for child r4pists, and those “boys” earned that punishment. I hope they get it, if not from the state, from karmic justice.

Killing a kid - rather having someone else kill a kid - because he put rocks in a girl's mouth doesn't sound like an eye for an eye, it sounds like rage and miscalculation. Age 12 is a big turning and learning point. Problem is who can he learn from?

We represent a family in Mirabelli v. Bonta whose daughter's school secretly transitioned her in 7th grade.
New name, new pronouns, all hidden from Mom and Dad—even in parent-teacher conferences.
She attempted suicide. Hospitalized twice.
The parents learned about her gender dysphoria from a doctor after her suicide attempt, not from the school.

I’m not just angry. I’m furious with you Elizabeth Warren.
Stop using the suffering of my people as political ammunition against Donald Trump.
You say you are grieving for those killed in this “unnecessary war.”
Really? I checked your social media. More than 20 posts attacking President Trump after he removed a monster terrorist of Iran, Ali Khamenei, but not one post grieving the massacre of more than 32,000 unarmed Iranian people. Why? Shocking.
More than 10,000 protesters were intentionally blinded by security forces. Young women were shot in the eyes. Students were beaten to death. Families were burying their children. Where were you then?
We are not a tool. The pain of us Iranians is not a talking point for your partisan battles.
As a woman, your silence while women in Iran were being shot, jailed, and blinded is more than disappointing. It is insulting. No it is beyond that. It is a slap in the face of Iranian mothers burying their children who have been killed by Islamic Republic.
I cannot ignore this hypocrisy.
Our suffering did not fit your narrative. Our voices were inconvenient. Now that the situation serves your political agenda, you speak loudly.
