David Willetts: The Budgetary significance of ‘persnuffle’ and ‘PuFins’ should not be overlooked #bbcnews #ITVnews conservativehome.com/2026/10… via @conhome One reason why Alan Milburn’s report is delayed may be so its costs do not show in the budget arithmetic. And to find the money to do all this the Chancellor will be hoping that something might turn up – an improvement in the growth rate is by far the best way of making all these problems manageable.

The strange death of the UK net contributor #r4today #bbcbreakfast open.substack.com/pub/ieains… Fewer than three in ten workers now pay their own way, as the state grows faster than the economy that funds it. That is not sustainable!

We have a very expensive electricity supply system in the Uk, due to renewables, or 'unreliable's' #bbcbreakfast #r4today
So there we have it. Probably the highest day ever in the BM at over £52 million The final number tends to be a bit higher than the trading figure reported by LCP This is what Connect & Manage has done... We spent £52 million because we had to throw away wind in Scotland that we built despite knowing we can't use it Plus NESO not curtailing it before the DA auction meaning instead of gas plant self dispatching it has to be bid on in the BM @Miatsf @mgshanks @AndrewBowie_MP @ClaireCoutinho @harrietc @ColinMoynihanUK @drlukeevans @ashley7fox @TiceRichard @cmackinlay @DavidGHFrost @mattwridley @Iromg @AllisonPearson @MerrynSW @EdConwaySky @afneil @mattotele @jonathan_leake @julietsamuel @energygovuk

Will Healey fund the UK Defence Investment Plan today? #bbcbreakfast #r4today If not, he is a charlatan and liar.
John Healey acted honourably when he resigned over Starmer’s failure to fund defence properly. Today, he delivers his first Budget as Chancellor. If he fails to fund the Defence Investment Plan in full, he will have an awful lot of explaining to do.

Are the UK people going to be fooled by the hapless Burnham 'vibes offensive'? He is clearly planning an imminent General Election. #bbcbreakfast #r4today Like the failed Starmer, the progressive media are not scrutinising Burnham, we saw how that went. Starmer was so bad, the Labour Party had to throw him and Reeves overboard, in two years. Be very clear, Burnham will have a hard left agenda, which like in France, will destroy the UK economy, in short order. You will have to pay a lot more tax!

The removal of gas standing charges simply goes onto the gas unit rate. There is no saving #bbcbreakfast #r4today
🤔 The removal of standing charges on gas bills…sounds good doesn’t it? 💁‍♂️ On the face of it, yes, in general bills might be lower - but here’s the catch… 🤨 If you are a ‘higher consumer’ (meaning someone that uses gas for heating, cooking, hot water etc) then your energy bill is about to go UP. That’s cause they are putting the fixed daily cost on to the Unit Rate. 🥶Next week in large parts of the UK, the temperature is going to get close to freezing. Because of these changes, if you live there and heat your home with gas and want to turn on the central heating…Labour just made your life much more difficult and far more expensive.

Healey's budget #bbcbreakfast #r4today
THREAD (1/7) Britain’s Budget on Wednesday is expected to be low-key. After recent chaos, that is no bad thing. But escaping the country’s economic drift will require something far bolder: a dose of shock therapy. My latest column for @FT: as.ft.com/r/aa18babc-96c7-4f…

BBC managers ‘gaslit’ Jewish staff over anti-Semitism #bbcbreakfast #r4today telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10… Employees told they were being ‘oversensitive’ when they complained about language hostile to Jewish people. Institutionally antisemitic?

RAF Fairford terror plot suspects ‘controlled by Iranian handler’ #bbcbreakfast #r4today telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10… Court hears Nouman Essghir and Mohmed Abdulkarim were in contact with man known as Ali, who prosecutors believe organised alleged plot. Iran is a major threat, which the UK is not dealing with

EVs make a lot of sense for China and India. Minimal domestic oil, lots of domestic coal. They are increasing coal consumption, in part to power their EVs.

Scrapping the standing charge for household gas is a redistribution from high volume users, to low volume users. Average of £45/year gain for the beneficiaries likely to be swamped by a £900/year ratchet-up in the Energy Price Cap.

Today's balancing costs are already over £20 million That's staggering Wind is forecast to drop off this afternoon so the costs should normalise later, but with this much so early it's going to be another expensive day Still don't understand why @neso_energy doesn't curtail the wind before the DA auction so gas can self-dispatch at lower cost and there would be no need to reverse interconnector trades Plus for goodness sake ditch Connect and Manage so we don't make this any worse @Miatsf @mgshanks @AndrewBowie_MP @ClaireCoutinho @harrietc @ColinMoynihanUK @drlukeevans @ashley7fox @TiceRichard @cmackinlay @DavidGHFrost @mattwridley @Iromg @AllisonPearson @MerrynSW @EdConwaySky @afneil @mattotele @jonathan_leake @julietsamuel @energygovuk

UK electricity supply system balancing mechanism costs already at over £20 million after 8 am Wednesday! #bbcbreakfast #r4today It was over £50million Tuesday! Wind is being constrained and we have to pay to switch it off!! No wonder UK electricity is expensive!

Against a target of 1.5 million homes built in five years, we are on track for 856,000 (57%). Such an abject failure would in any other venture require an urgent change of strategy. Here, they just quietly abandon the target. ft.com/content/285af47d-a0cc…
