LOOK AND READ: DARK TOWERS (1981) The BBC's famous literacy strand for primary school kids threw up the occasional scary serial, and this classic - written by Andrew 'House of Cards' Davies - gave kids the heebie-jeebies. With songs by Derek Griffiths, too!

The need for independent oversight of faith organisations safeguarding confirmed in another national report. Glad to see the author highlight that survivors are a resource, not a threat.
A dreadful catalogue of abuse that underlines why faith organisations shouldn't be left to mark their own homework on safeguarding. As the review notes, too many have prioritised protecting their reputation above all else. Independent oversight needed.

Replying to @UnlockingBirth
Thanks Selina - yes - I think ‘supporting physiological birth’ whilst being vigilant with an emphasis on good multi-professional teamwork - together with putting women’s choices and preferences first - should be the overriding ethos of maternity care.

The hidden logic of emotion and anxiety. How does the brain turn a racing heartbeat into an inference of threat or safety?
A fascinating new perspective in Science explores "internal emotion models"—neural circuits that integrate lingering emotional states, bodily (interoceptive) signals, and prior learning to map abstract context and infer meaning.
By bridging the gap between reactive animal behavior and higher-order human experience, this cross-species framework is unlocking fresh mechanism-based pathways for treating anxiety and trauma.

Use of violent pornography shapes people's sexual scripts, feeding into their perpetration of sexual violence. A new study again finds this among male university students. Porn's effects were worse if males saw porn as realistic and believed that their peers endorsed rape myths.

Teaching people about social identity, group dynamics, and intergroup relations is more important than ever. Students are living through an era of intense polarization, online conflict, generational divides, and eroding trust in institutions.
So we updated our free Power of Us syllabus and teaching materials to help instructors teach the science of identity with fresh examples, new readings, classroom activities, videos, and editable slides.
Our free educational content package includes:
-Syllabus and course schedule
-Educational videos
-Suggested readings (including debunking famous psychology studies)
-Chapter summaries & key takeaways
-Lecture slides (editable .pptx file)
-Test questions
-Interactive activities/assignments
-Interactive class Q&A with either Jay or Dom
-Newsletters discussing related topics (eg., new content on AI)
The course syllabus is ideal for college students, but can easily be adapted for high school classes and book clubs (e.g., by focusing on on the book and excluding any assignments), organizations (e.g., by removing the academic journal articles and replacing them case studies or practical activities), or advanced academic seminars (e.g., by focusing on the original research articles and requiring an original research project). Be creative and adapt the content for their audience—then let us know so we can share it with others.
