Ticket Touting Investigation: A PR Exercise Riddled with Contradictions
From a genuine anti-touting perspective, where evidence was used to prove guilt, I think we can all agree the correct punishment was given. Every other supporter who either had restrictions fully lifted, actively fought, or continued to fight the club's allegations through formal appeals, I still feel, was treated unfairly.
There are still 922 supporters, 50% of whom have been given a final warning or heavy operational sanctions, including the removal of forwarding home tickets and the ability to apply for away games for the season ahead, with absolutely no indication of what they have actually done wrong. How are these supporters supposedly meant to act going forward if there is no indication of what the offence is?
A forensic look at the club’s latest update exposes five major irregularities, procedural contradictions, and statistical sleights of hand:
1. The "Financial Gain" Contradiction
What the Club Claims Publicly: The club asserts that season ticket bans were strictly "reserved for where there was sufficient evidence of tickets being sold above face value or activity for financial gain."
What the Private Letters Actually Say: In determinations issued to supporters whose appeals were dismissed, the panel cited broad administrative boilerplate: tickets being "controlled, managed, transferred or resold for sale outside of our documented authorised processes."
The Reality: The club is telling the media that all 499 upheld bans involved proven financial exploitation. In reality, their own paperwork lumps non-commercial family administration and informal ticket transfers into the same bucket as commercial touting, without establishing any illicit profit.
2. Inventing Uncodified Sanction Categories
The 464 Penalised Non-Profiteers: The club openly admits that 226 accounts received a final warning and 238 accounts had bans reduced to away match application bans and the loss of home ticket forwarding because the panel was "satisfied there was no financial gain" or "not satisfied there was sufficient evidence of financial gain."
The Reality: If there was no financial gain, under what clause of the published Official Sanctions Policy are supporters being stripped of core supporter benefits? Neither a 12-month away ban nor the permanent revocation of forwarding exists in the published Level 2 framework for non-commercial activity. Furthermore, identical shared-account patterns produced arbitrary, inconsistent outcomes: some received final warnings, while others faced severe operational restrictions. I have concrete evidence confirming this reality, yet the club stubbornly refuses to adjust the standing of these affected accounts.
3. Undermining the Ombudsman and Resale Price Discrepancies
The IFO Smokescreen: While the club publicly purports to allow supporters to submit cases to the Independent Football Ombudsman by delaying ticket redistributions until "after the international break," this brief hiatus is entirely superficial. Because a proper IFO review requires months of investigation, holding off for a mere few days represents a hollow, performative gesture. It establishes an irreversible outcome by reassigning seats to waitlisted applicants long before any impartial body can evaluate the underlying details.
The Pricing Contradiction: The club pledged that seats sold on a match-by-match basis during this interim period would be sold at season ticket prices rather than inflated matchday prices. While this was observed for the home derby, supporters reported that tickets for other fixtures listed at matchday rates, such as members paying £58 for a £46 seat, directly contradicting the assertion that the club is not profiting from the process.
4. False Claims of Evidential Transparency
What the Club Claims Publicly: The club claims account holders were "told what activity had been identified to be able to respond to the club with an appropriate level of detail."
The Reality: This directly contradicts what match-goers experienced and what the club's own Data Protection team confirmed. When supporters submitted Subject Access Requests (SARs) demanding the raw technical logs, device fingerprint hashes, and IP audit trails used to flag them, the club formally refused to disclose the data. Fans were forced into blind appeal panels, compelled to prove their innocence against opaque algorithms without being shown the evidence.
5. An Admission of Operational Incompetence
What the Club Claims Publicly: The club admitted it did not "anticipate the extent to which" supporters shared logins in circumstances they regarded as legitimate.
The Reality: This is an astonishing admission of executive failure. The club unleashed an automated dragnet across 1,600+ accounts without understanding the basic fabric of match-going culture—where families, older relatives, and supporters' branch members routinely pool applications and manage bookings. Rather than admitting the initial data sweep was fundamentally flawed, the club shifted the goalposts during appeals, scrutinising routine attendance patterns to justify the exercise.
The September 2026 update is a PR/Public Relations exercise designed to conflate loyal match-going fans with organised touting rings.
The entire process, from initial third-party tooling to panel adjudications, demands a full, independent external audit. The club should welcome that, but there is absolutely no chance they’d entertain the idea.
Let’s also remember the innocent supporters caught up in the charade who never received an apology.
