Captain Smit Machchhar was perhaps one of those men.
Look closely at the scars on the back of his head. Those are not just marks of a brutal assault, they are the permanent reminders of a day when one man’s courage stood between life and death for nearly 180 innocent people.
Imagine being struck repeatedly on the head with a Emergency Axe 🪓,bleeding, suffering unimaginable pain, yet knowing that losing consciousness could mean losing everyone on board.
At that moment, his survival was no longer about saving himself. The fate of an entire aircraft rested on his ability to remain conscious, resist his attackers and continue fighting.
And he did.
The consequences of that day could have extended far beyond those 180 lives. A catastrophic outcome might have triggered an international crisis at an already dangerous moment in history.
I genuinely wonder how many people could have endured such a savage attack and still found the strength to fight back.
Today, seeing Captain Smit Machchhar being honoured in the UAE, with those scars still visible, is a powerful reminder that some heroes carry their medals on their uniforms, while others carry them on their bodies for the rest of their lives.
He didn’t just survive that day. He gave others a chance to survive too.
Respect to this extraordinary man, his courage, his determination and his refusal to surrender. 🫡❤️🇮🇳
