#VPDNews: A 26-year-old Vancouver man has been convicted after a two-year investigation in connection with a discharge of a firearm near Helmcken and Seymour streets that occurred after the quick actions of a Vancouver Police officer led to his arrest moments after shots were fired. Nobody was injured in the incident. On August 16, 2024, two Vancouver Police officers observed a man they believed was acting suspiciously in the downtown area. The officers noticed the man was wearing clothing inconsistent with the hot weather and was repeatedly checking his surroundings. One of the officers followed the man on foot. The suspect turned a corner out of view, at which time the pursuing officer heard gunshots. Both officers immediately located and challenged the suspect at gunpoint until additional officers arrived and took him into custody. On December 15, 2025, Harmesh Raghbir Singh Sandhu, 26, entered a guilty plea to the following charges: - Possession of a loaded restricted firearm - Careless use of a firearm On September 4, 2026, Sandhu was sentenced to a global sentence of 46 months. The Court also imposed a 10-year firearms/weapons prohibition, a DNA order, and a forfeiture order. “This was a patrol-led investigation from start to finish. The vigilance and instincts of these patrol officers led to the immediate arrest of an armed suspect and ultimately helped secure this conviction.” says Constable Darren Wong.

He had short grey/brown hair, brown eyes, and dentures, and a tattoo of an anchor on his upper left arm. VPD investigators are releasing a picture of the tattoo with hopes that someone may recognize it. #VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is reminding drivers and parents to exercise additional caution as daylight hours wane and visibility on the roads becomes more challenging. At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, officers were in the area of East Pender Street and Victoria Drive attending an unrelated call when they witnessed a seven-year-old girl attempt to cross the street mid-block between parked vehicles to reach her parents’ vehicle on the opposite side of the road. The child ran into the roadway and was struck by a vehicle travelling at approximately 20 km/h. The driver was unable to see the child before she entered the roadway. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The girl was transported to hospital and has been released with minor injuries. “This incident is an important reminder for pedestrians to exercise additional caution and for drivers to stay vigilant, especially during darker morning and evening commutes,” said Constable. Megan Lui. “With Halloween approaching and excitement building for trick-or-treating, we encourage families to plan ahead and remind children to use crosswalks, stay visible, and be aware of traffic when out in their neighbourhoods.”

#VPDNews: A 48-year-old man from New Mexico has been charged after allegedly entering a Vancouver home early Wednesday morning, where he was discovered by the resident. On October 21, 2026, around 3:45 a.m., a woman was asleep in a residence near Atlin Street and East 29th Avenue when she awoke to find an unknown man reportedly rummaging through her personal belongings. The woman pretended to be asleep until the man left the room, then locked her bedroom door and called the Vancouver Police Department. She reported that she lived with roommates and believed the man was still inside the home. Officers quickly responded to the residence and located the suspect on the second floor. When they attempted to speak with him, he ran into a nearby bedroom. The officers observed him attempting to jump out of the window, and he was then taken into custody. The suspect refused to identify himself. Officers located identification belonging to a resident of New Mexico and have since been able to confirm his identity. Daniel Joseph Campbell, 48, has been charged with one count of break-and-enter and one count of obstructing a peace officer. Campbell remains in custody.

#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is advising the public not to disclose banking information after a staff member at a downtown organization was defrauded of $34,000 after receiving a phone call from someone posing as a bank representative. The caller, who used a spoofed phone number, appeared to have detailed information about the victim's banking accounts. During a call that lasted more than an hour, the suspect convinced the victim to provide information that allowed access to two bank accounts. The victim later discovered that the accounts had been drained of approximately $18,000 and $16,000, for a total loss of $34,000. The incident was reported to police. The VPD is reminding the public to be cautious when receiving unsolicited calls from anyone claiming to represent a financial institution. Never provide personal or banking information over the phone unless you have independently verified the caller's identity. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact your bank directly using the phone number listed on your bank card or the bank’s official website.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police arrested a 45-year-old man following an alleged armed road rage incident in South Vancouver yesterday afternoon. On October 20 at approximately 12:00 p.m., VPD received a report of an incident near Fraser Street and East 45th Avenue. The victim reported she was driving and slowed down for a speed bump, prompting a male driver behind her to begin tailgating. The man then passed her on the left, stopped in front of her vehicle and approached her window. She alleged he produced what appeared to be a black handgun and pointed it at her before driving away. With the assistance of responding surveillance and the VPD Emergency Response Team (ERT), officers located the suspect vehicle parked near Knight Street and East 57th Avenue. A man matching the description of the suspect was walking away from the vehicle. Officers observed the man discard an object in the west lane of Knight Street, near East 57th Avenue. The man returned to the parked vehicle and drove away. ERT members successfully disabled the vehicle about a block away and took him into custody without incident. Officers recovered a BB gun in the laneway at the location they had observed the man discarding something. “This was a frightening ordeal for a driver simply going about her day," said Constable Darren Wong. "Thanks to the quick response and action of our officers, we were able to safely take the suspect into custody and recover the weapon." Rahat Arshad Ali, 45, has been charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence. He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Since 2013, a dedicated group of female #VPD officers has been volunteering and giving back to the community through the VPD Women’s Personal Safety Team. Their mission is to educate, inspire, and empower women to take charge of their personal safety. An all-day hands-on workshop took place last weekend, where these officers taught practical, easy-to-remember self-defence techniques that required no previous training. The goal is to help women feel more confident, prepared, and able to respond if they ever face a dangerous situation. The workshops are made possible by the generous support from the Vancouver Police Foundation. Learn more: bit.ly/4zJ34oo @VanPoliceFnd
