Taking home less than half your wage should never, ever be justified.
You should never have to work for the state more than you work for yourself.
I read a piece in the FT this week about the price of being middle class in Britain now and it said a couple earning ยฃ436,000 combined take home ยฃ216,000. Thatโs a crazy amount of tax, and it doesn't include VAT on purchases, council tax, stamp duty or other taxes (I think does include pension contributions). I canโt stop thinking about it.

My pinned tweet explains the background to Healey resignation.
We got real numbers in 2020 for first time in ~20 years.
Since then everything reverted to fake.
Thanks to Trolley & Wally, they let HMT and MoD shovel cash into things they KNEW were broken, like AJAX, and scuppered funding the future (e.g drones, robotics, AI, cloud).
The nuclear weapons supply chain is a multi-billion multi-decade fiasco and reinforces fake budgets.
MoD & CO used UKR war to prop up the lies and disasters, not to fix them. Trolley, Sunak and Starmer all went along with: classify, punt, spin fake budgets.
All these chickens are coming home to roost.
The DIP is a disaster because it combines: a/ continuing to fund old things which shd be scrapped but senior people's careers rest on lying about, b/ failure to fund the future, c/ more dodgy accounts, d/ classified nuke shitshow, which forces lies/cannibalisation of conventional, and e/ continued failure to change procurement and long term budgets despite covid and UKR.
Ive said this 100 times for years.
Also relevant to resignation --
In 2020, I got the PM & CHX to agree to take the next gen fighter AWAY from HMT and MoD. (FOI the doc screenshotted below!)
They were using a bogus 'above STRAP 3 study' to claim that AI would be irrelevant to future fighters in 2045. This 'top secret' study was written *before* DeepMind was created!!
We agreed to take away the next gen fighter/drones from MoD/HMT and put them into a new civilian project with huge commercial development of drones/robotics/AI, with procurement and budgets done totally outside normal system (like vaccines, ARPA etc).
After I left this was u-turned along with shredding all the true budget numbers.
The MoD and HMT proceeded with the usual procurement with BaE.
This has now blown up *as it was obvious it would SIX YEARS ago'.
HMT is refusing to fund it because the MoD is a corrupt shambles.
And MoD is knackered by the HMT's insane budget processes and insane procurement.
HMT and MoD have reasonable complaints about each other. 'Everyone's right and everyone's unhappy'.
The only way out is the Vote Leave plan and No10 smashing heads together with the full authority of the PM, as in the secret process of 2020. It cannot be left to 'normal processes'. Senior people must be forced to tell the truth 'or you're fired'. We did this. It works!
The MPs refuse to engage. The MPs on defence committee say they cannot ask officials re the 2020 process because 'they'll just refuse to answer'.
But our enemies know everything everything I say is true!
It is impossible for dud Starmer to solve these problems.
It is good timing that Burnham will soon take over and could draw a line under decades of Tory failure and set out a new path...
But there will be HUGE pressure from the old system, in HMT and MoD, to patch everythign up with more lies, spin, fake accounts, and massive classification...
Maybe some MPs could finally pay attention to these issues and resolve to stop constant lies, please!
Our security, prosperity and critical technologies are at stake and the old parties and old Whitehall are pathological!
NB. In 2020 we also bought LEO satellites. SW1 laughed. Starlink has been critical in UKR. Whitehall sold off the satellites!
NB. In March 2022 when the UKR disaster started I wrote: 'Prediction: 1) lessons from UKR will overwhelmingly support the arguments of those who in 2020 argued for radical MoD changes (including taking money from old tank projects that everybody privately admitted were a multi-billion pound disaster) and 2) the correct criticism of the review and connected documents will be seen as a) they did not go nearly far enough, b) the collapse of No10 follow through on defence reform in 2021 was โ like the collapse of 2020 plans for planning reform, tax cuts, deregulation, Project Speed, intense focus on R&D and skills etc โ a disaster for the country (and a political disaster for the Tory Party).'
NB. Special Forces who have observed the drone wars in UKR have told the senior MoD repeatedly that the mega expensive things they want to plough cash into in the DIP will get VAPOURISED in a real war by cheap drones! The SF are told to shut up and not give HMT a chance to cut the budgets!
I know it's psychologically extremely hard for SW1 but Vote Leave worked with the deep state on this in 2020 and we were right on all the big things.
The disastrous old processes have now blown up with unprecedented resignation over these exact issues.
6 years have been wasted. Tens of billions have been wasted. Lives lost. Talent resigned.. Opportunities to lead squandered...
All over Whitehall are officials involved in 2020 who know what I say is true, the MPs and hacks should finally get the details into the public...
Maybe SW1 could update its mental models?!
Ps. if you're a hack still getting Ciaran 'AI is fake, PRC infiltration is overrated' Martin to comment on tech, you're as dud as Starmer
I've explained this ~20 times since 2021.
In 2020 in the secret review of the MoD -- conducted in No10 with officials & without the involvement of the SoS because he was seen as a security risk to the process -- the MoD ADMITTED that AJAX was a 'total shitshow and dangerous to troops and would injure/deafen them'. They also agreed to close AJAX.
AJAX was one of DOZENS of things the MoD admitted in this process were disasters and shd be closed down.
We agreed to:
1/ Close the disasters.
2/ Change procurement and MoD budget processes fundamentally.
3/ Publicly explain the lies of the budget process of the previous 20 years and publish for the first time in 20 years budget numbers agreed by MoD, Cabinet Office, and HMT were TRUE.
4/ Shift new money to new programs done with new procurement. E.g drones - which in 2020 Wally thought were fake and he just wanted, like most of the senior generals, more bigger tanks. (When I pushed through buying LEO satellites with MI6 help, much of senior MoD opposed that too. Until Starlink was used in UKR, conventional wisdom in SW1 dismissed it -- look at all the laughter in 2020 when I forced this through.)
5/ Start honesty on the massive classified scandalous shitshow of the nuclear enterprise, tens and tens of billions hidden.
6/ Stop the MoD doing the new fighter using the old procurement system, partly based on 'above STRAP 3' study proving AI /drones would be irrelevant for advanced manned ('crewed'!) fighters until at least 2045. This 'above STRAP 3' MoD study turned out - when I finally got a copy - to have been conducted in ... 2010. I.e before DeepMind was sold to Google. Ludicrous. Normal. I got PM and CHX agreement to do the new plane project OUTSIDE the MoD with a totally new process.
This was all finally agreed a fortnight or so before I left No10.
After I left No10, documents were shredded in <24 hours.
The true budget numbers were destroyed.
Everything shifted back to the fake budget numbers.
AJAX and dozens of other disasters were funded MORE.
The procurement system continued and continued through UKR war. (Today special forces keep pleading with MoD to do drones differently, MoD continues the pathological system and orders SF not to inform ministers of the truth on drones in UKR.)
The nuclear shitshow was classified and punted again.
MoD was given the new plane project which, surprise surprise, is the normal process with normal results.
And everyone agreed that the 2020 secret process was never to be discussed or even acknowledged to exist (even though it was officially briefed it was happening and you can see it on the internet).
Trolley and Wally went along because they're both pure products of the pathological old system: lies and total failure are just another day at the office.
They immediately reverted to the Osborne/Heywood/Mcpherson double counting budget lies which are normal in SW1 and wd get you jailed outside it.
I've said this repeatedly.
The media and MPs will never ever cover it.
Just like the official Inquiry on covid in 2020, so the official truth on MoD in 2020 is lies all the way down.
Instead we will continue to have these fake 'revelations' and 'experts' will continue to say 'I'm shocked, shocked about the latest MoD shitshow'.
One MP on the Defence committee called me earlier this year for advice. I said hold hearings and call Simon Case, Lovegrove and the ~20 who did the secret process to give evidence under oath.
MP: 'That's impossible, they always just refuse to talk to MPs on the grounds of national security.'
Yes, quite. So MPs should either enforce change or quit and do something else with their lives.
What's the point of being an MP in such a corrupt shitshow?
Why bother with your Potemkin 'committees'?
Ps. If you are a soldier injured in AJAX, then bear in mind that *the MoD KNEW you would be injured and did it anyway rather than admit their failures publicly.*
Everyone involved will be given gongs and many a job in BAE.
Gongs all round, the system working as intended...
This is about the 20th time I've explained all this. Watch how the legacy media just keeps wandering around saying 'Im shocked to see this' and does zero probing of the 2020 secret review.
Fixing the MoD is an example of *a regime-complete problem*.

Why is Martin Lewis being told things before the house of commons?
CONFIRMED. Gas Standing Charges to be scrapped. I've just come out of a meeting with the Chancellor. The gas standing charge will be scrapped in 2027 (my guess, either for 1 Oct price cap or the 1 Jan 28 price cap). Having campaigned against the moral hazard of standing charges for years, I'm pleased.
It's currently ยฃ108 a year. That cost will be shifted onto unit rates. We don't know how much yet, but I suspect just under 1p per kwH.
The Chancellor also said he will be talking to Ofgem about how they get rid of the charge on electricity as well, but that is 'trickier' apparently and will take longer.
This is primarily about the price cap standing charges. There will still be an open market, so other firms can offer other forms of prices with or without the standing charge. My suspicion is that once it goes on the price cap, it will tend to be reduced on other tariffs as well.
As for those on fixes: if you get a fix now, the rate of your fix is fixed, so this should not affect it. You will pay what you pay and if it has standing charges they will continue (some asking if they should delay fixing because of this, no if a fix is right for you and will save you money, don't let this change that - this is about the structure of bills, as opposed to the actual costs on bills).
About 60% of people will pay less due to this, 40% more. My guesstimate is the dividing line will be somewhere around 12,500 kilowatt hours of gas (can't know until there is actual pricing). According to a study by Nesta, this switch would leave the majority of people in all income groups under ยฃ100,000 better off.
Of course, when this does come in, if we're still in the nightmare that we are right now, there will need to be support put in for vulnerable higher users, who will have to pay more. Though hopefully by then the mid-east will have calmed and energy prices lower.
---------------
That's all long term. The biggest issue in energy right now is that we're expecting a 27% rise in the price cap in January. I asked the Chancellor whether he will be intervening on that. He told me I'd have to wait for the budget, but reading between the lines, yes, there will be an announcement today.
Whether it's an increase in the Warm Home Discount, or whether it's council tax banned, or whether it's done via a payout for people in say council tax bands A-D as a proxy for household income as Rishi Sunak did who knows.

Anyone STILL citing the failed Dublin Agreement as the reason for small boats is fundamentally dishonest.
Was trying to think of an โorโ to add to that sentence but there isnโt one.
Here is the Home Secretary back in February contradicting Andy Burnham's claims today.
She confirmed that the small boats have NOTHING to do with Brexit - and that the Dublin returns scheme did not work.
She also noted that we never knew how many were arriving in lorries...
Interesting difference between the PM and his Home Secretary over Brexit and small boats.
Andy Burnham today blamed the crisis on Britain losing its EU returns agreement after Brexit but Shabana Mahmood has previously rejected that argument.
She told the Home Affairs Committee in February: "I am sure there are lots of other debates to be had about the rights and wrongs of Brexit, but is Brexit responsible for the boats? I do not think that is true...
โThe idea that this has happened because we have lost the access to Dublin and the returns agreement with the EU - I think that is too much of a stretch.โ
In September, she went further, arguing that under Britain's one-in, one-out deal with France โmore returns have happened than ever was the case under the Dublin arrangements, when we were still members of the EU".
She also warned that it was โa mistake to see the EUโs new pact as some sort of new silver bulletโ that would eliminate Britain's migration problems.

Thatcherism stands for sound finance; it stands for honest money, not inflation; it stands for living within your means; it stands for incentives, because we know full well that the economic strength of a nation comes from the efforts of its people, and its people need incentives to work as hard as they possibly can. All of that has produced economic growth.
It stands for something else: It stands for the wider spread of ownership of property, of houses, of shares, of savings; it stands for being strong in defence, a reliable ally and a trusted friend.
People have called those 'Thatcherism'. They are, in fact, fundamental commonsense, and having faith in the enterprise and abilities of the people.
It was my task to try to release those. They were always there. They have always been there in the British people but they couldn't flourish under socialism.

Almost everything Burnham says in this piece is a lie.
- We didn't get a "harder" Brexit than what was mentioned in the Referendum. We left with the most comprehensive trade agreement the EU has ever signed.
- The small boats crisis didn't emerge because of losing "returns agreements". While we were in the EU we were a net-, recipient of illegal immigrants from these agreements, the small boats crisis has emerged because of a global surge in illegal immigration and pull-factors like our human rights laws.
- Immigration within the EU was not "revolving door". It has been permanent, and significantly more than estimated at the time. Over 6 million people have come here on the EU Settlement scheme, double estimated.

Brazil Election Chaos Cheat Sheet:
โข Brazil provides free busing to and from voting centers
โข In order to be deemed neutral, those buses are not allowed to have any political signs, etc
โข In several states that skew toward Lula, the buses had "PT" stars affixed to them (PT is Lula's party). The official in charge of busing said those buses could not run unless the signs were taken down, delaying the busing. Lots of finger-pointing ensued
โข There is an election tribunal in Brazil that oversees election legal issues, but Lula went around it and appealed directly to the Supreme Court
โข The SC assigns a single justice to review; Lula asked for an extension specifically IN THOSE STATES (which heavily skew toward Lula)
โข The Justice who made the decision was previously Lula's PERSONAL LAWYER and is a Lula appointee
โข Once Bolsonaro knew Lula was asking for extensions and suspected it would be granted (given which justice was reviewing), he also requested extensions so they would be nationwide, and not just in Lula territory
โข A nationwide extension was granted just AFTER the polling stations were supposed to close (5:00pm). However, once a voting machine is locked for the day, it cannot be unlocked. In practice, this meant most polling stations were not able to reopen and offer extended voting because they'd closed at 5pm
โข By an AMAZING coincidence, nearly all of the voting machines that hadn't yet locked were in the four states where Lula polls well over 70% popularity (northeast)
โข There are supposed to be two observers (one from each side) at all polling stations. At many of the extended stations, the word is there were not two observers
โข In the first round voting (three weeks ago), Bolsonaro won 47% and Lula 45% of 119mm votes, with ~8% to third-party candidates
โข Of the 8%, the candidates skewed strongly to the right (Bolsonaro); everyone assumed Bolsonaro would take the large majority of that 8% and win easily in round two (yesterday)
โข As it turned out, Lula "outperformed" in basically every state
โข Also, apparently 5 million more people voted in round two (yesterday) than in round one
โข Lula picked up 10.5mm votes, whereas Bolsonaro picked up 3.7mm, leading to tremendous suspicion, as 3.7mm isn't even the majority of the 8% right-leaning opportunity from round one, and implies Bolsonaro received 0% of the incremental 5 million votes and less than half of the jump ball votes
โข Chaos ensues. The $EWZ Brazil index ETF has been down as much as 28% this morning (mix of currency and index declines)

This is what happens when you donโt build a single new reservoir since 1992, and grow your population by 12 million people in the meantime.
Exc: Ministers have been secretly warned that some English reservoirs are at risk of running dry, hitting water supplies to homes in the run-up to Christmas.
The governmentโs emergency committee, known as Cobra, is meeting up to twice a week to discuss the situation in the southwest of England and Sussex.
A secret โreasonable worst-case scenarioโ was drawn up, anticipating that several reservoirsโ water stocks could fall to 0 per cent โ dubbed โday zeroโ โ within weeks.
Officials warned that without action, supplies to some homes could be affected, along with disruption to the construction of a nuclear power station and operations at a prison.
Steps have been taken by ministers and water companies to try to mitigate the risks, which insiders stressed were already starting to push back the โday zeroโ dates.
Experts on the governmentโs Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) have also been brought in to help review water companiesโ modelling for protecting stocks for the weeks ahead.
Heatwaves over the summer left half of England in drought. Sussex and the southwest were the most severely affected.
Wimbleball reservoir, which supplies more than 400,000 people in Somerset, has 13 per cent of its capacity, while Ardingly, which serves 280,000 customers across West Sussex, is at 17 per cent, figures from yesterday show.
Reasonable worst-case scenario plans were drawn up by the government, setting out a โday zeroโ envisaging Wimbleball and Ardingly reservoirsโ stocks being completely depleted by December.
Subsequently, the government privately said it was told by South West Water that it did not anticipate Wimbleball running dry due to measures it had put in place. South East Water is also taking action that has shifted Whitehall โday zeroโ forecasts at Ardingly into next year. Even if the reservoirs did run completely dry, water companies would probably be able to transfer supplies from elsewhere.
However, significant concerns remain in government about water disruption to properties supplied by Devonโs Venford reservoir in early November. โDay zeroโ risk monitoring has also started for Cornwallโs Stithians and Drift reservoirs.
Water companies were asked to model the impact of water-saving measures, which have been scrutinised by members of Sage. Ministers were told that shortages could affect daily operations at HMP Exeter and the construction of Hinkley Point C, a nuclear power station being built in Somerset.
Normal levels of rainfall over autumn and winter will not be enough to counteract the effects of the drought, which was extended to cover Yorkshire this month. Officials have calculated there will need to be 120 per cent of long-term average rainfall over the next six months for a nationwide recovery.
