We're only about a week away from the full operational debut of the RRFS and REFS models and the retirement of the NAM, HRW, SREF, and HREF models. Currently working on a video that will discuss what's changing, why NOAA is making these changes, the timeline behind how we got here, and some nuances of the RRFS/REFS that might be useful when forecasting in the future. Stay tuned.

The satanic leaf-tailed gecko is a master of disguise that specializes in mimicking dry leaves. Its tail even looks like it’s rotting or has been chewed. If spotted by a foe, this Madagascar resident will drop the camouflage act & open its bright red mouth for a shocking display.

TORNADO SEASON BEGINS SOON: Alabama’s tornado season runs from November through May, so we will be in that season in less than one week. Here's a map that needs a little explaining. It's from Dr. Victor Gensini's group at Northern Illinois University — a 'top ten analogs' map for Week 3, November 10–16. Dr. Gensini is a friend and they do wonderful work at NIU. Here's what that means: they found the ten past weeks whose large-scale patterns best matched the one expected that week, then plotted where tornadoes happened in those weeks. Each dot is a tornado report from those analog weeks. Red dots are significant tornadoes, EF2 or stronger. Total: 290 tornadoes across the ten weeks, an average of 29 per week, with 39 significant ones. Notice where they cluster: the Deep South, including right here in Alabama, plus parts of the Midwest. That's the classic fall severe weather setup for “Dixie Alley”. Important: this is NOT a forecast of 290 tornadoes that week, and it doesn't mean your town gets hit. It's a heads-up: the pattern shaping up for mid-November has historically produced elevated tornado activity in the Southeast. Stay weather-aware as we get into November.

This isn't lightning, but it's still electric! ⚡ A pilot flying in Australia captured a phenomenon known as St. Elmo's Fire. It occurs when strong electric fields ionize the air, creating glowing plasma along parts of the aircraft, including the windshield. The phenomenon itself isn't dangerous, but it can be a warning sign of nearby thunderstorms and lightning.

Another SpaceX launch is scheduled for 6:30 AM Monday, but don’t expect a repeat of last week’s spectacular show. This rocket will head southeast from Florida, away from the Carolinas. Last week’s launch traveled northeast up the East Coast, giving us a much better view of that gorgeous glowing plume. We may catch a glimpse toward the south or southeast, but anything visible would likely stay very low near the horizon, with any illuminated plume much farther away. If you’re up, it’s worth a look. For me, I’m sleeping in. 🚀🚀🚀

Still of a rain-wrapped #tornado that passed just to my west on October 11, 2026. I was just west of Louisburg, NC on 56. The tornado was confirmed by the NWS to be EF-1, path length 1.93 miles, maximum width 130 yards. Luckily no injuries or deaths. @NWSRaleigh

I had a great view of the @SpaceX Falcon 9 resupply rocket to the space station early this morning. CRS-55 mission. Not quite as good as some previous launches, but still nice. Those watching in FL had an amazing view of iridescent clouds from the rocket.
