There is a corner of the internet I had never heard of before I started reporting this story.
It’s called the “burnerverse”: a sprawling network of anonymous college-sports accounts that can look, at first glance, like ordinary shitposting.

Rarely does @WIRED solve mysteries with book excerpts.
This—which reveals how a disguised man with a mysterious buzzing bulge calling himself “John von Neumann” played a grandmaster to a draw—is an exception.
Big thanks to @KitChellel! (Go get his book.)
