After 16 months in London studying, learning, and networking, it's finally time to say goodbye to the most incredible city in the world. I am making this decision because I believe in a dream and I hope one day I will say yes I made the right decisions.
New @JV_Institute publication.
Somalia's growth slowed to ~3% in 2025 as aid declined and climate shocks hit hard, but the World Bank's latest Economic Update points to one fix with outsized impact: electricity. Somalia has some of the world's highest power tariffs, driven by fragmented, diesel-dependent providers and weak grids, with only ~50% of the population having access and renewable energy lagging regional peers despite strong untapped solar and wind potential. Adding urgency: debt is at a manageable 18.1% of GDP post-HIPC, but donor revenue still funds roughly two-thirds of government spending, meaning structural reform can't wait for aid to rebound.
The path forward includes operationalizing the National Electricity Authority, standardizing tariffs and licensing, scaling up solar mini-grids through public-private partnerships, broadening the domestic tax base, and strengthening social protection for drought-affected communities. Affordable, reliable energy isn't a sector fix, it's the precondition for everything else Somalia is trying to build.

Somalia has overcome greater challenges through Somali-led dialogue and compromise. This is a moment to put national interest above divisive political ambitions and preserve the hard-won gains of state-building, security, and stability.

Political disagreements are inevitable in any democracy. What matters is whether institutions can manage them without undermining national stability.
At this critical juncture, Somalia needs dialogue over deadlock, consensus over confrontation, and statesmanship over political brinkmanship. The costs of prolonged uncertainty will be borne not by politicians, but by ordinary citizens.

Ignoring Somalia’s state fragility is both futile and dangerous. Starting a conflict that cannot be controlled is unwise. Addressing the situation with violence instead of reason is not only illogical but also counterproductive.
Poking at healing wounds risks undoing years of hard-earned trust. The progress we’ve achieved is at risk of being wasted. Resorting to violence while neglecting diplomatic and conciliatory efforts is not the solution.
