Complementarianism was supposed to settle the question of women in the church. It didnโt.
Now, the drift toward egalitarianism and feminism in the church has only accelerated. Some churches say they are complementarian but adopt the posture that โa woman may do anything a non-ordained man may do.โ May a woman preach on Motherโs Day โunder the authorityโ of the elders? What about teaching a Sunday school class or leading a small group? May a woman serve as a deacon? What about the growing number of women enrolled in seminaries?
Drawing from years of experience helping their own churches navigate these issues, pastors D. @dmichaelclary) and Zachary M. Garris (@ZacharyGarris) argue that mainstream complementarianism was never sturdy enough to hold the line. They wrote this book to give the church something firmer.

I think there is a place for bivocational pastors (such as for very small churches, church plants, and assisting pastors).
But I do think full-time pastors should be the norm. My primary reason is that the ministry is a calling, and the regular preparation of sermons (and other forms of teaching) should take substantial time and focus.
But also consider the many duties of the pastorโpreaching sermons, teaching, setting the order of worship, administration (including emails), praying for the congregation, showing hospitality (including having others to his home), visiting families in their home, visiting the sick, providing counsel, doing funerals and weddings, communicating with other elders and staff, catechizing the children, training ruling elders and deacons, seeking outreach opportunities.
Presbyterians also hold there is a duty to serve the regional presbytery and the church at large, which involves lots of emails, phone calls, travel, and drafting documents.
This is to say nothing of the pastor cultivating his mind through books, reading the Bible, and keeping up his Hebrew and Greek. The pastor is also uniquely suited to speak in other venues, write books and articles to build up the church, and teach in various school settings.
And he must leave time for his wife and children, and take care of his health.
As a pastor, I can firmly say that I donโt have time for another job. The ministry is enjoyable and fulfilling work. But it is definitely a vocation.

Women's groups fought to dismantle men's clubs, fraternities, the Boy Scouts, the YMCA. Now they're surprised men are isolated โ and that it's women who pay for it.
โA lot of women tell me this is new,โ writes Monica Corcoran Harel. โTheir spouses werenโt always so withdrawn. They married fun men who had fun friends. Their husbands used to hang out, even text, with those dudes. They had lives outside their romantic relationship. Somewhere along the way, though, they quit making the effort.โ
If you look closely, youโll see these women everywhere. The โwing wife,โ who talks her husband up at social events because he doesnโt say much or engage; the โtake-flight wife,โ who literally pushes her spouse toward a group of men, as a bird urges her fledgling out of the nest; the โnot-now wife,โ who refuses to play the game and simply resents her introverted husband.
Here, Harel explores how โ and why โ so many married women say they have unwillingly become the managers of their husbandsโ social lives: the-cut.visitlink.me/zW3i9F

The gospel of Jesus Christ does not create a private religious enclave; it creates a kingdom. And though that kingdom is not of this world, it speaks to this world with transforming power. The Scriptures reveal a moral order, a vision for human dignity, and a call to justice and mercy. These truths must not be confined to the inner life. They must inform how we vote, advocate, serve, and lead.
Pastors, therefore, cannot disciple believers effectively without addressing how their faith intersects with politics. To ignore this realm is to yield it to rival gods. As Jonathan Leeman writes, โMake no mistake: We are not talking about politics versus religion. We are talking about two different politics based on two different religionsโฆ.self-worshipโฆ[and] God worship.โ (Leeman, How the Nations Rage, 62). All politics is religious, and the only question is which type of religion is undergirding oneโs politics. We must not forego the battle.
When we preach about the image of God, we are providing the foundation for human rights and dignity that has profound political implications. When we preach about Godโs justice and mercy, we are shaping how Christians think about criminal justice reform and care for the poor. When we preach about the lordship of Christ, we are relativizing all earthly powers and authorities.
The institutional church should not dictate policy, but it must proclaim the moral truths of Scripture that bear on public life. As Herman Bavinck argued, the church has the right and the duty to judge the moral character of actions that affect the kingdom of God.
A faithful expositor of Scripture cannot avoid public issues. To preach the whole counsel of God is to confront idolatry in all its formsโincluding the idolatry of the state, the marketplace, or the self. It is to proclaim the lordship of Christ over all things, including our civic loyalties and political affiliations.
