In 2018, Africa had about 4.3 million health workers. By 2024, that number reached 5.72 million. That is about 700,000 more nurses, doctors, midwives and other health workers in six years. Community health workers alone now number around 1.06 million. For many families in rural areas, they are the first, and often the only, link to care. But these numbers represent less than 50% of the health workforce Africa needs to meet Universal Health Coverage targets by 2030. The shortage is easing, but slowly. It has gone from 6.1 million to 5.85 million. We are moving in the right direction, but not fast enough. Africa must train, recognize, regulate, remunerate and empower its health workers faster and at a far larger scale. #AfricaCDC #PrimaryHealthCare #HealthSecurity #CHW2030 #fmohnigeria #UNICEF

💧 “Water and sanitation are not a narrow technical matter. They concern dignity, health, peace, and the future we promise to our children.” Ambassador @WilCarew, Head of the @AU_ECOSOCC Secretariat, reflected on an eight-month #civilsociety-led journey to advance the 2026 AU Theme on water availability and safe sanitation. From the Civil Society Pre-Summit in Addis Ababa 🇪🇹 to a two-part E-Symposium, civil society and partners have sustained dialogue to develop solutions and policy recommendations that can advance progress towards #Agenda2063. As the E-Symposium concludes, the focus remains on turning these collective insights into action. 📍Session 2️⃣ of the E-Symposium on the 2026 @_AfricanUnion Theme of the Year: #Water and #Sanitation #AUTOTY2026 #YearOfWaterAndSanitation #WASH #WaterForAfrica #ClimateAction #FoodSecurity

Thirty-three years ago, African governments were told they were not capable. They built @Afreximbank anyway: a bank owned by Africans, governed by Africans and answerable to Africans. At the Alamein Africa Forum, I called on our leaders to stand behind the institution they created. Ownership carries the responsibility to keep capitalising our institutions, honour the treaties that protect them and defend them collectively. Our shareholders have demonstrated that commitment, again and again, in cash, often when their own budgets were under pressure. Their support has enabled us to keep financing African economies when others withdrew. When Africa needs its bank, its bank must be there. That record deserves to be assessed accurately. Credit ratings should measure substance, not conformity. I thank President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Government of Egypt for hosting us and for standing with Afreximbank since its earliest years. Egypt gave this Bank a home when it was untested and widely doubted. We must now build on what we have created: African institutions that can mobilise African savings, finance African trade and invest in African businesses and infrastructure at the scale our continent requires. When the world retreats, Africa must not. Watch my address in full: youtu.be/am73EDC1QbU
