Three generations of one family at Otjivize Village in the Epupa Constituency are living with the same undiagnosed medical condition, compounded by poverty, hunger and a lack of identification documents. Fatima Shapondaka was born with the condition, which also affects her first-born daughter and her daughter’s first-born child. The condition results in short lower legs and swollen knees and feet. This makes it difficult for them to walk, and they are paralysed. The family’s hardship has forced one of Shapondaka’s daughters to leave school and become a full-time caregiver, while also fetching water from handmade wells and scoop holes and preparing food for the family. Far from health facilities, Shapondaka says her granddaughter was born in the village because the family could not reach a hospital. The family also struggles with hunger and remains unable to access assistance because they lack birth certificates. Shapondaka is appealing to the relevant authorities for help with registration and support, hoping her family can finally access the assistance they desperately need.
