I'm old enough to remember when Labour respected the democratic decision of the working class. Listen to Angela Rayner speaking to Sophy Ridge on 27 January 2019. Back then, she warned that holding a second Brexit referendum would mean politicians had "failed the public". Parliament's job, she argued, was to honour the result and get on with delivering Brexit. Fast forward to October 2026, and the same Angela Rayner is defending Andy Burnham's insistence that "nothing is off the table" in discussions with Brussels, as freedom of movement and even a return to the single market are being openly considered. Of course, Rayner insists any future changes should be put to voters at a general election. But there's a remarkable difference between the language of 2019 and what we're hearing today. Labour once understood that democracy meant accepting the people's decision, even when the political establishment didn't like it. Ten years after the referendum, Westminster is still debating how much of Brexit it can reverse, while our industries decline, public services struggle and communities wait for the change they were promised. The British people voted to take back democratic control. It's about time our politicians found the courage to exercise it. #Brexit #BrexitBetrayal @AngelaRayner
