Emissive shaders. Type a temperature in K and get a blackbody colour – that's how most shaders do it, and it's wrong for practically every real material. Kirchhoff's law fixes it. linkedin.com/pulse/thermal-l…

NoGraphicsAPI is released (MIT license)! It's a low-level Vulkan 1.4 wrapper using latest extensions (BDA, descriptor heap, device address commands, unified image layouts) to get as close as possibly to my No Graphics API blog post and SIGGRAPH 26 talk. github.com/sebbbi/NoGraphics…

monte-carlo path tracing performs iterative denoising diffusion model does it as well the authors bridge the two: maps MC noise → diffusion noise + correct timestep so diffusion model can finish rendering as a learned denoiser

Ray marching is a common approach to GPU-accelerated volume rendering, but gives biased transmittance estimates. My new @SIGGRAPHAsia paper (+code) proposes an amazingly simple formula to eliminate this bias almost completely without using more samples. momentsingraphics.de/Siggrap…

Projective Displacement Mapping for Ray Traced Editable Surfaces Rama Carl Hoetzlein arxiv.org/abs/2502.02011 Abstract: Displacement mapping is an important tool for modeling detailed geometric features. We explore the problem of authoring complex surfaces while ray tracing interactively. Current techniques for ray tracing displaced surfaces rely on acceleration structures that require dynamic rebuilding when edited. These techniques are typically used for massive static scenes or the compression of detailed source assets. Our interest lies in modeling and look development of artistic features with real-time ray tracing. We demonstrate projective displacement mapping, a direct sampling method without a bottom-level acceleration structure combined with a top-level hardware BVH. Quality and performance are improved over existing methods with smoothed displaced normals, thin feature sampling, tight prism bounds and ray-bilinear patch intersections. Our method is faster than comparable approaches for ray tracing, enabling real-time surface editing.

Gaussian Billboards: Expressive 2D Gaussian Splatting with Textures Contributions: 1. An extension to 2DGS with a spatially-varying color defined by a per-primitive texture. 2. A detailed ablation of the introduced hyperparameters. 3. An evaluation of 2D and 3D scene representations showing the improved capabilities of Gaussian Billboards in representing texture details.

Coffee is an important ritual for most people. But it's also a scientifically validated intervention that improves health, longevity, cognitive function, and physical performance. Our latest episode synthesizes extensive research to illuminate how the timing, brewing methods, and additives to coffee influence its health benefits and risks. From biological aging to cardiovascular protection and enhanced brain function, this episode provides comprehensive, actionable insights for integrating coffee optimally into daily life. I also explore: • How coffee reduces the risk of several of the major diseases of aging • The optimal way to prepare your coffee for maximum health benefits • The safety of coffee decaffeination methods • Whether your coffee could be laden with health-harming mycotoxins • The optimal dose of caffeine for mental and physical stimulation Coffee drinkers or not—you need to listen to this episode. It might change the way you think about this widely consumed beverage. Links to YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify in the comments.
