This! This is why I despise with every ounce of my aesthetic soul the new trend of “lightswitch flicking” stadium lights after big moments. Sports’ soul lies in the joy and agony of the faces of the players and fans. Capturing those moments on video or in photos is the very stuff of sports! For those unaware, Wake Forest is 11th in the ESPN FPI right now. You know, the system that had them 53rd in the preseason behind every single team in the SEC including Arkansas and Vandy (“every SEC team has a Top 20 strength of schedule!”) But even now that Wake has overcome the horrible preseason rating, has a good record, has good metrics, has the predictive model/Vegas “they would be favored over others” advantages… they’re still just 16th in the CFP rankings at 7-1. Can’t win no matter what they do.
