@Firelightfi is reimagining DeFi cover/insurance from a first principles perspective. The so-called “traditional” approach to DeFi insurance is fundamentally broken.
• Cost mismatch: Using ETH to insure ETH doesn’t scale — the cost of capital is structurally too high.
• Risk mismatch: Entrusting unproven insurance protocols to protect safer, battle-tested DeFi platforms is a paradox. Liquidity providers would rather stay in the protocol being “insured.”
• Leverage mismatch: 1 ETH to insure 1 ETH isn’t a model — it’s a dead end. True insurance relies on scaling laws and diversified leverage.
• Liquidity mismatch: Retail LPs can’t price complex protocol risk or provide enough depth to scale meaningful cover.
• Underwriter mismatch: Most DeFi insurance protocols have never been tested under real stress events like 2022–2023. Without institutional-grade risk management, there’s no chance of resilience.
• Scale mismatch: DeFi has evolved far beyond the early insurance experiments. Any serious protection layer today must start with billion-scale capacity.
The conclusion is simple: DeFi insurance needs a complete redesign — one built on leverage, cross-asset efficiency, and institutional risk frameworks, not fragile token games.
