I've spent this past week a little baffled by the story of the bakery in Borough Market that says it's been asked to leave because it's too successful. Could that really be the case? The answer, as ever, is complicated. My first story for @_TheLondoner

I'm sure you've seen the thousands of ads about gassing pigs or lice-infected salmon that now plaster the tube. They're costing £400,000 every few weeks. So who's paying for it? And how does it relate to a strange Silicon Valley movement fixated on AI? the-londoner.co.uk/tube-ads-…

EXCL: HMV is being forced out of its Oxford Street flagship store after its landlord doubled the rent. For @_TheLondoner I found out it's owned by the family of a billionaire Chinese "king of mahjong" who will turn it into a viral immersive gift shop. the-londoner.co.uk/oxford-st…

Might actually have to quit social media for a bit to avoid spoilers while we wait a full MONTH for You Can See Everything to come out in the UK.

One of the oddest details of this story was a tangential controversy about a romance novel featuring a character who is the "heir" of a KKK chapter. Written by a British author. Backlash notwithstanding, it has a 4.25 rating on Goodreads!
ICYMI: Our weekend read covers a spat in the romance reader community that has unravelled into accusations of homophobia, threats of legal action and a controversy over a love story featuring a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

A classic tale of online drama today. Worth adding to your weekend reading list.
RARE27, planned for next summer at London's Olympia, was meant to be the "Met Gala of the book community". Then over a few days, it fell apart. We pieced together what happened. 🔗the-londoner.co.uk/london-ro…

I had a blast on the new Prospect podcast Tell Me Why, discussing AI winning literary prizes, the 'dearth of the author' and cognitive debt.

I've made my peace with slow walkers. With a bit of patience, I can easily overtake. It's the people who almost exactly match my pace I can't handle. Too fast to overtake, too slow to keep a comfortable distance from, so I feel like I'm following them.

Honestly found the opening of this story kind of frightening. How long until one of these burst mains pipes causes more than just flood damage?
This was the scene at the Lord Morpeth in Bow this summer after a burst mains pipe flooded the pub. Three months on, the business is still waiting on compensation from Thames Water. 🧵

THE SOCIAL RECKONING: A far more conventional film that The Social Network. More in the mould of Spotlight/She Said. Jeremy Allen White makes a convincing dishevelled journalist. Not as Sorkintastic as feared despite one scene where an office breaks into applause. I enjoyed it!

Sarah Wynn Williams is at the screening of The Social Reckoning in London but is once again staying silent onstage, apparently due to legal threats from Meta
