I'm making an open-ended coding game/toy about using code to generate 3D objects. Does this explain it?

#Balatro is now rated 18+ 🃏
The game's creator fires back:
"Since PEGI gave us an 18+ rating for having evil playing cards, maybe I should add microtransactions, loot boxes, and real gambling to lower that rating to 3+ like EA Sports FC"

This was the most important thing said at The Game Awards - a cheat code for success in the industry.
I hope developers listen. The formula is not that hard.

Indie game devs are the onyl industry that thinks "sharing progress" is marketing.
A friend of mine opened my eyes to that. She said "if you are making a game about pirates, why don't you create content about pirates? Your audience wants pirates not code and tools"

The same for ANY company creating any product. If at the top you lose the artists and designers and swap them out for number crunchers, you are essentially signing up to fail. You're putting the cart before the horse.

For many years, it was anathema to even bring up the idea of money during development meetings at Blizzard. Then Activision pushed Blizzard to hire a CFO, and everything began to change. bloomberg.com/news/features/…

I'm just following trends, it may not be obvious for people outside the industry but this look wouldn't have been possible without UE5 and Lumen, incredible work by @UnrealEngine

Game console dev documentation, tools, and libraries being under NDA / partner agreements is a weird anachronism today. Microsoft would never consider doing that for a Windows API. They should just open everything up post launch and make console dev like mobile dev.

I think the biggest area to highlight is the "people who have worked together for years". Great games are made by great teams and great teams are formed over years learning and failing. Everytime a studio lays people off they reset that clock.
The secrets behind Astro Bot's success include a small team, a reasonable scope, and people who have worked together for years. It's a model for the video game industry.
For this week's column, I spoke to the director of 2024's best-reviewed game: bloomberg.com/news/newslette…

I remember myself and @HalSalmn trying to share this data internally. Glad Godot is becoming a powerhouse in the space and Unity needs to invest in its developers of all sizes.
I know theres fantastic teams at Unity, I just think they need to be empowered more.
These are the game engines that people used to make 7,711 game jam games, for GMTK Game Jam 2024.
Congrats to @godotengine for the absolutely massive jump from last year!

Now Apple is demanding a 30% cut of all Patreon DONATIONS. Apple must be stopped. The digital world cannot go on like this.
If you use the @Patreon app on iOS and decide to donate to your favorite artist or developer Apple will get 30% of your donation. Because... you know... because??? Eh... because...???

Pixar boss Pete Docter once asked Hayao Miyazaki while discussing the development of films: “When do you make changes for yourself, and when do you make changes for the audience?”
Miyazaki replied: “I never think about the audience"

This is the reason Godot will eventually eat Unity's lunch. All those tiny annoying defects get fixed instead of every developer coming up with their own private workaround.
