I wrote about the Rohingya for @USIP . Of 2.8 million around the world, only 23% still live in Myanmar. Conditions are worst for those in Bangladesh & Myanmar. But comprehensive solutions should also consider the future of the entire community. usip.org/publications/2024/0…

"Human rights documentation must remain non-political. ... Allowing abuses to go unchecked because they are committed by a party we support only perpetuates a cycle of violations," Peter Bouckaert of @FortifyRights tells @faisal_reports.

Some Western brands have unxpectedly incresed sourcing from #Bangladesh even as the country goes through a preiod of political instability. It is too early to tell if this trend will continue, but it is a good sign for what can happen in the near future.

When we read an analysis of India’s failed Bangladesh policy, we never hear of Shah’s termites phraseology, CAA, targeting of Muslims in India, stringent visa policy for friendly Bangladeshis, role of the BSF on the border & the use of Bangladeshi as a slur by Indian officials.

As I listened to this podcast I was reminded how much work needs to be done to improve the understanding of policy elites in #India about #Bangladesh’s reality. In the U.S. there is a general lack of knowledge about Bangladesh. In India, the challenge may be greater because the opinions are so deeply ingrained. This also extends to misunderstanding about the U.S.’ approach to the region.

Thousands of #Rohingya become IDPs… no shelter , no food and no medicine urgent humanitarian aid and protection needed.
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MUST
EXERT maximum pressure on the Arakan Army and the SAC to immediately cease all hostilities against civilians. The protection of civilians must be the highest priority. We demand immediate and unimpeded humanitarian access to all affected areas, including #Maungdaw and #Buthidaung. The international community must ensure that life-saving aid, including food, medicine, and shelter, reaches those in desperate need.

Back in 2023, I blamed the BNP for spoiling the caretaker system. I stand by that. As for the Awami League, we could have had a peaceful transition of power in 2014 instead of a revolution in 2024. Today, we are in a constitutional vacuum. Hence, we have an interim government.
