The British Columbia election is a great lens into the Canadian vs American voter mindset. Longer post, for my few American mutuals who are interested: In America, politics is like wrestling: no off-season. House elections every 2 years mean constant campaigning. It is the American system But in Canada, elections come every 4 years (it used to be 5). Same with the provinces The point is: Canadians don’t like constant elections. It isn’t the Canadian way. Unless it’s a minority government, they want it over with so they can move on. Only the political smart marks talk politics in between. No “they stole the election” nonsense. The only screwjob Canadians still complain about is Montreal ‘97 Having 3 or 4 parties paradoxically means less tribalism. People switch all the time (Liberal to NDP, Liberal to Conservative), so it isn’t “us vs them.” The now defeated socialist BC premier (Canada’s version of a governor, sort of) ordered a snap election two years early, when he didn’t have to. The Conservatives were in disarray, virtually leaderless, factions brawling in the parking lot. On paper, it looked like a squash match But Canadians don’t like constant elections. They threw him and his socialist party out and went Conservative, in a province so left wing (basically Canada’s California) that Conservatives haven’t been in power for almost 100 years. Even left wing voters punished their party for making them vote again and again Old school pro wrestling promoters had a rule: run the same town too often and you burn out the crowd. BC had city elections one Saturday, and he booked his show for the next. His own fans turned on him and the underdog went over. BC’s message to the defeated NDP premier, paraphrasing Canada’s own Kenny Omega: I must bid you adieu. Goodbye and good night. BANG! #cdnpoli

Bob Uecker's Harry Doyle calls from "Major League" became part of baseball movie history. The famous misses, deadpan reactions and booth one-liners worked because Uecker already knew exactly how a baseball broadcast was supposed to sound. He could parody an announcer without making the character feel fake. That's why the clips still work even for people who have heard the real Uecker call games for decades.

No matter one's views about politicians or their policies – in the campaign shown below, Komatireddy is running for Attorney General in New York State – love to see in-the-street conversations with voters. The way politics should be done: every campaign should include this!
Another great morning talking to New Yorkers during the morning commute! Coming soon to a subway stop near you…

The Brazilian presidential debate going on right now is using a really interesting format. Instead of having the moderators ask the questions (and inject bias into the debate with their tones, smirks, snapbacks and "fact checks", etc.), each candidate chooses a topic from the screen, and then asks the other candidate a question about that topic, with the other candidate receiving time to answer. To prevent interruptions, the other side's mic is secured at each phase. US should try this, it leads to much better exchanges with much less partisan interference.

100%. It's not just Bill Watterson's lush art and funny writing that made "Calvin & Hobbes" so special to me as a kid. It's that Calvin was LITERALLY ME and every other precocious, mischievous little boy. If you have any boys, buy EVERY anthology of this strip you can and share it with them. They will love it. As an added bonus— Watterson does a wonderful job making Calvin's parents respectable, stable figures in his life. Calvin is, of course, always in trouble. But it's clearly a safe, loving home. Just one of the all-time great comic strips.
No one in the history of media knew the interior workings of a young boy’s brain better than Bill Watterson

🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐. All of these people are GOATS in their field. As far as the one who wasn’t a broadcaster, Jim Murray was a legendary sports writer in Los Angeles. Hearn, Scully, Enberg, Murray and Jackson. All were legendary.

"We are all boys of summer. The years drop off, the steps get lighter, the heart beats faster when we step through the turnstile and hear the bats cracking and smell the hot dogs cooking. It’s summer again and Casey’s coming up and the bases are loaded and this time he’ll hit it." Jim Murray. "The infield fly rule is about as simple as calligraphy. It might as well be a Japanese naval code." Chick Hearn, Vin Scully, Dick Enberg, Jim Murray, Keith Jackson. Legends!!!

Today we published one of the best things I've read on the trans debate. Free of the usual acrimony that surrounds these issues, it's compassionate, clear-eyed, and a partisan only of evidence and reason. By @Edokwin. Check it out: freeblackthought.substack.co…

Today marks the 11th anniversary of my cousin Sam McNeil’s death from heroin after an 8-year addiction battle. He was passionate about sports- he played DB for the Hudson Explorers and loved his Cleveland teams! He was such a positive guy and was loved by everyone fortunate enough to know him. Check to make sure your state’s laws about postmarked ballots. Some states require a postmark to be accepted regardless of arrival date, others, like Florida, don’t accept postmarked ballots, there is a hard deadline and postmark won’t make a difference.

If you have to mail your ballot on Election Day, take it to the desk inside the post office. They can give you a manual postmark.
