Pounds of butter should be packaged with 2 sticks salted and 2 sticks unsalted: cooking butter _and_ eating butter, in a single package. Thanks for coming to my TED talk

At some point we have to talk about how Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed for far less than what Donald Trump did and is still actively doing.

Man I've been making the YIMBY case against fossil fuels for 15 years and now Chevron just comes right out and ... writes a giant check to the NIMBY.
Folks it doesn't get more on the nose than this. NIMBYism benefits the oil industry.
NEW: Chevron just gave $50,000 to support LA Mayor Karen Bass — and defeat Nithya Raman.
"They view Karen Bass as someone who they can work with, someone who will protect their interests in L.A. And they view Nithya Raman as a threat to fossil fuels." climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/…

YOU'RE NOT PAYING TAXES FOR THE PROPERTY, YOU'RE PAYING YOUR TOWN FOR THE SERVICES IT PROVIDES. THE ROADS, POLICE, SCHOOLS, FIRE DEPARTMENT, LIBRARY, SNOW PLOWS, EMERGENCY SERVICES AND SO MUCH MORE.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?”
Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

minimum apartment size rules are a planner looking at a cheap 250 square foot studio and deciding you’d be better off with a roommate you hate or a two hour commute. the market offered you something and the state took it away for your own good

the city requires two parking spaces per apartment, a garage space costs $50k to build, so fewer units pencil out, so rent goes up, so people move somewhere cheaper and farther, so they need a car. the parking requirement manufactures the demand for the parking requirement

BART is very efficiently run and only has a funding gap because top 10% stopped commuting every day of the week
Meanwhile service workers must travel at all hours of the day and are dependent on a functioning and affordable transit system

Imagine working for Starlink in TX, CA & WA, going home to your own family at night knowing the product Musk sold to Ukraine for battlefield Wifi use is now being turned off so Putin can murder children in Kyiv. There must be some kinda ‘paper trail’ in your offices. Leak it now.

The blowup within the left/Democratic coalition around building stuff -- houses, solar, really anything -- has the potential to crater the Party and destroy actual left priorities for a generation, or longer.
YIMBYs saw this coming a decade ago. It's now here.
I’ve been in the clean energy industry as an entrepreneur for 15 years after a prior career in Dem politics as a bona fide progressive. Without changing many of my views I’ve left that community behind. By far the most frustrating experiences I’ve had on the ground developing solar were in counties run by leftie democrats in my home state of Maryland which is behind now on clean energy goals. They always thought they had a better idea or were smarter than the entire solar community combined. I see that same dynamic with @RepHuffman on permitting reform. Jared, your home state of California is BEHIND on the SB 100 goals. Permits, interconnects, transmission are part of the reason why. THIS is the legislation we believe in. We know our businesses and what removes the rate limiters.
We need to elect politicians who want to BUILD the future. (Oh by the way Maryland Dem legislature eventually passed a great permitting bill.)

“We think of BART trains, tracks and stations as permanent, immovable features of our landscape—but they’re not. Just like the abandoned 16th Street Station in Oakland which once was a depot for trolleys coming across the Bay Bridge or the North Berkeley tunnel which once was part of a master system of interurban trains on East Bay streets, our transit today can easily become the ruins of tomorrow if we don’t support it.” darrellowens.substack.com/p/…

Correction with exact numbers:
Without RTM BART's budget for FY28 (July 2027 - June 2028) would be $273M less than the previous year's in nominal dollars

This is just wild.
In the midst of the AI bubble, where there has never been more money in the Bay Area, and the pointless war on Iran that disrupted the world’s oil supply, we’re talking about 70% cuts in public transit.

"sardine cortado garnished with a single cigarette ash" sent me
My bf and I made the mistake of going to an experimental coffee pop-up in NYC. We’d just spent an insane amount of time walking in the pouring rain and we were tired, hungry, and desperately in need of caffeine so decided to pull up. The line was a sea of microbangs and enormous trousers. Everyone looked like they could explain the history of a lamp for 45 minutes without ever mentioning whether it provides light. In retrospect, this should have been sufficient warning that we were about to order some bullshit.
In our exhausted state, we ordered the special without bothering to look at the ingredients. This was a stupid oversight, because the special contained espresso, dashi milk, kombu, fermented rice, and fucking FISH FLAKES. In coffee. A beautiful beverage that has enjoyed a dignified existence for ages without the involvement of marine life!!!
I’m increasingly convinced this entire subculture is locked in a status-signaling arms race where the ability to enjoy something is actually a mark against it. A normal latte tastes good, which is precisely why it has 0 cultural value. Any idiot can enjoy a latte. To demonstrate that you possess taste and a truly sophisticated palate, you must drink something that tastes like the drainage system of a fish market, maintain a pensive expression, and comment on its “complexity”. Bc why were ppl at the cafe pretending to enjoy ts lmao
And the beautiful thing is nobody can call bs. Because the second you admit you don’t like the fishy espresso, you’ve exposed yourself as an uncultured moron incapable of appreciating experimental gastronomy. The entire status hierarchy of this subculture depends on everyone being too terrified of appearing unsophisticated to admit that something tastes like shit. The highest compliment you can pay a drink in these circles isn’t “delicious,” it’s “interesting,” which the universal term for something you suspect you're supposed to admire but would never voluntarily experience twice.
So everyone just keeps escalating. Today it’s a fish latte, tomorrow it’s a sardine cortado garnished with a single cigarette ash, and 30 people in those fuckass Tabi shoes will call it some shit like “challenging but rewarding”. Someone will write an essay about how the discomfort is actually the point, etc etc
It’s a prisoner’s dilemma sitch. Everyone is pretending to enjoy progressively more repulsive things because nobody wants to be the first person to admit that the emperor is naked and his coffee tastes like a tide pool.
Nobody actually wants fish coffee. They want to be the sort of person who has tried fish coffee. The beverage itself is completely incidental to the performance of having taste.
The coffee is more of a loyalty test than a beverage.
And tbc, nobody forced us to go. We are two grown adults who willingly stood in that line and proceeded with the transaction. We are going to get pumpkin spice lattes now.
Ps: Of course it was $37.58 for the two fuckass drinks.
Oh NYC.

It is very dire. A 70% service cut would leave a lot of riders stranded
- End service at 9pm
- End Red and Green lines
- 30m frequencies at peak
- Close 15 stations
- 50% fare increase
- Layoff 1200 people :(
