You cannot have a government whose major activity is to take money away from people living ordered, productive lives, to give it to people who are not.
It's incredibly obnoxious this political obsession with "the most vulnerable communities". You need to be focused on taxpayers, actually. You can't triage a society like it's an emergency room. Taxpayers prop up everything, and if you disregard them for the "marginalized" class, the productive members of society leave and everything collapses.
Some people are in dire straits through no fault of their own. Many others are there because they suck, and we need to be honest about that. They're either addicts or malcontents or they perpetuate destructive culture. The more you indulge them, the worse their destructive habits get. Hold the door open for opportunities, but if they can't get their shit together, giving them free stuff just further incentivizes bad behavior.
The illegal street vendor thing in LA has become a plague. It's not cute. It's not cultural enrichment. It's 3rd world shit. Get a job in a restaurant. Let the restaurant do al fresco dining, like a civilized society. Can we please stop pretending that street vendors dumping pig fat onto our sidewalks is somehow virtuous?
Feeling strong feelings has completely replaced thinking smart thoughts.
Or thinking any thoughts, honestly.

In the future (maybe happening already) rich parents will spend a fortune to get their kids into schools which are decidedly tech-free. Paper, pencils, textbooks, direct and explicit instruction, cursive handwriting, etc.
The backlash to broken tech promises is coming. And our children be better off for it.
Only a few replies in, and what emerges is a fascinating cross-section of humanity.
Everyone on the planet, believer or otherwise, appeals to a higher authority when he thinks he's right and the other guy's wrong.

K-12 education might not be easy, but it’s not as complicated as we’ve made it.
-Clear, consistent behavior expectations
-Content-rich, cohesive curriculum
-Teacher-led instruction
-Assessments that provide useful data
-Grades that reflect the truth
Hard, not complicated.
yesssssssssssss
(never really did fall, icyww)
Tomorrow we're releasing a full UATX course for free: all 19 lectures of Professor Isabella Reinhardt's Rise and Fall of Ancient Rome, filmed in class with our students.
It runs from Rome's mythical founding to the Third Century Crisis. It ends on a question the class spent a whole session arguing about: did Rome ever really fall?

Voting is important, surely. But homeschooling has more political bang for the buck than a single vote every 4 years.
Homeschooling is a intergenerational shift in our society.

Friends, in just two days, Christians were murdered on two continents.
On Friday, gunmen opened fire on a funeral at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Karak, Jordan, and killed nine people. On Saturday, armed men attacked Orthodox churches and homes in Oromia, Ethiopia, and killed more than forty.
These are not statistics. They are our brothers and sisters, members of the mystical Body of Christ. When Saul set out to destroy the Church, the risen Jesus asked him, “Why are you persecuting me?” The Lord is still being persecuted in these victims of anti-Christian violence.
Christianity is by far the most persecuted religion in the world today. Those of us who worship in comfort have to ask what the deaths of these martyrs demand of us. At the very least, they demand that we pray for them, learn their names, press our leaders to act, and refuse to look away.
The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.
Someday, my children will thank God for the blessing of having so many siblings.
Today is not that day.

We simply have to stop appointing bishops whose ability to manage exceeds their desire to.
The Francis Papacy in particular has been dominated by choices of bishops who are perfect reflections of the failed 1980s version of American Catholicism.
There is not one intelligent person who would spend time in any Diocese, look over the landscape and think to themselves “You know what we really need to do? Ban the Saint Michael prayer after mass.”
Final note on this topic:
Not two months ago a left-wing publication put out an article about why we shouldn’t pray that Saint Michael prayer after mass.
If you do not think this is a coordinated effort, you haven’t been paying attention.
Our local bishop is banning the St Michael prayer from the end of Mass.
His article, in the local Catholic paper, explains that in order to celebrate the liturgy “in accordance with the mind of the Church” priests need to “catechize the people of God as we move away from additional prayers recited together immediately before, during, and immediately after Mass.”
I know this is insignificant in the grand scheme.
But I just won my first game on @lichess.
Only barely...by the skin of the queen's teeth.
But I'll take it.
(p.s. learned how to play chess when I was 10....never played again until ~3 months ago.)
