William Henry and Herbert Le May were a father-and-son partnership who traded as hop factors from 67 Borough High Street, Southwark. Their former business premises are a wonderful surviving reminder of London's historic brewing trade.
A hop factor was an intermediary in the brewing industry. Hop growers, particularly those in Kent and Sussex, supplied their crops through factors, who acted as agents and sold the hops on to merchants and ultimately breweries. Hops were essential for brewing beer, contributing bitterness, flavour and aroma. #borough #brewing
